TERM 1 UPDATE

Term 1 is drawing to a close and were all looking forward to Easter and a break.

During the school holidays there are opportunities for students to visits Tertiary institutes who are running workshops and information session designed for Secondary students.  A list of these is on the Scoresby Careers website, information will also been emailed directly to students and parents in the senior school and is on the notice board in the senior school hub.  If you have any questions about how to access these opportunities or how to use the careers website    https://www.scoresbysccareers.com/  please call me 9765 4118 or email careers@scoresbysc.vic.edu.au

This term we have been talking to Year 10 students and supporting them to arrange their Work Experience placement which is in the last week of term 2 June 24 – 29.

Many students have organised placements, or made a good start. Congratulations to these Students The paperwork was distributed at information night last year, another copy is available for students to collect from me, they have been reminded and encouraged to collect this. I will also place a copy on compass, this is the initial details gathering form.

These details will help produce the official paperwork to be taken to the employer to complete, then signed by student and parents and when complete back to school to be approved and signed by Mrs Major.

The holidays is great opportunity to secure a work experience placement you will have time to research and  go directly to the places you are interested in doing your work experience, make sure you are prepared; looking neat and tidy, do some research on the company/workplace so you can ask or answer questions if required, do they have an online application process,  have a basic resume(user the resume builder on the careers website- can be accessed via the menu on the left hand side of the page when you go into your student secure area then scroll down to create a resume- it only has to be brief just something to show your interests, and for an employer to see you are organised and has your contact details.

A letter will be coming home to year 10 students regarding alternative dates for students who are unable to secure a placement at some of the popular workplaces on the Work Experience week, as the letter explains permission will be considered on an individual basic many factors need to be considered.  Students will also still be required to participate in work experience placement for the week, Monday 24 – Friday 29 June

Students who are trying and have had a couple of knock backs, keep on trying. While it is a fantastic opportunity to investigate a career and for many to experience the world of work for the first time, it is often very challenging and you may have to try many work places before being successful. The skills gained from putting together the application and making contact are valuable and you should congratulate yourselves on every enquiry and contact you make, it take resilience to keep on applying, a skill that you will use every day for the rest of your life.

I am available Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday recess and lunch times and am happy to meet with students before or after school to guide and assist you to find a placement.

Parents can help by encouraging students to make a list of careers and workplaces they are interested in, doing some research so you know something about the company or organisation, making contact initially by telephone to find the correct contact person; to either send a request or go and meet with. It is important and employers will respond well to students making these calls themselves, not parents.

Have a great break and see you in term 2 refreshed and ready to go.
