College Athletics
On Tuesday 5 March the College held its annual Athletics Carnival at Knox Athletics Track.
Hemmed between days of sweltering heat and pounding rain, the sun gods smiled on athletes and officials alike with a day of clear skies and moderate temperatures. The atmosphere in the stands was pulsating from the early track events through to the day’s ultimate (and not to be sniffed at) event The Egg and Spoon Race. The spirit of sportsmanship was alive and well with students not only challenging themselves in a variety of track and field events, but also providing encouragement to their classmates and fellow competitors.
Year 12 students continued in a longstanding tradition of bringing light-hearted pageantry to the day – fairies, servicemen, The Bananas in Pyjamas, nuns, Mrs Claus and a number of other weird and wonderful characters were sighted competing in different events throughout the day. Each house was strongly represented with the stands awash with the yellows, reds, greens and blues of students’ respective houses.
In what was deemed to be their strongest line-up in recent years, the teachers were yet again unable to match the might of the year 12 All Star Relay Team. An inquiry was mooted, though did not get past the preliminary stages, as officials found the relative poor performance of the teachers was due simply to their ‘just not being any good’. A representative for the teachers’ team was not made available for comment.
The final result was a nail biter with Dunlop pinching the victory from Chisholm, Bradman and then Sutherland. The results also indicated that student participation continues to grow year on year.
