College Principal's Report

Welcome to this edition of the Score

Welcome to this edition of Score

Term 2 is always a very important time as it brings together much of the learning undertaken throughout term one as teachers test for student understanding and application in major assessment tasks and in the case of our senior students prepare them for their mid-year examinations.  It is also the term in which NAPLAN is conducted in all schools across Australia. It is therefore paramount that as a College we balance our learning values of rigour, responsibility and relevance in addition to student wellbeing.  This can only be achieved if our families keep our student services team informed of any concerns that may arise.

NAPLAN

I would like to acknowledge the work carried out by Ms Michelle Deboer and her team in preparing for this year’s NAPLAN testing as the tests moved to an online format.  The significant preparation and organisation throughout the testing period minimised the number of issues our students faced compared to many other schools. Our students were well supported whenever they faced minor technical difficulties arose enabling them to calmly complete the tests without disruption.

NAPLAN provides parents and the college with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests.  NAPLAN is just one aspect of a range of assessment and reporting processes - it does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance.

This term our Year 10 students will be finalising their arrangements for their week of Work Experience and there are a large number of music, leadership, lunchtime activities and sporting events that will involve many of our students across all Year Levels.

Student Voice

Students have had access to multiple opportunities to be engaged in student voice and leadership events. Since the last edition of the newsletter we have had:

  • the launch of Rotary Interact Club
  • captains attending the Youth Council feedback lunch with Kim Wells and Nick Wakeling
  • a successful primary school leadership training day  with our student leaders leading seven  local primary school teams to develop a student voice project in their own schools
  • students participate in the Department Respectful Relationships Student Voice Workshops at Swinburne Lilydale
  • students trained as facilitators in preparation for the  Knox Police Youth Symposium  to be conducted in June

MUNA

Model United Nations Assembly heard ‘Scoresby Student Voice’.

Rotary Club of Knox sponsored, Zac Tarquinio and Shannen Toogood, both from Year 11, to participate in the Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA).  MUNA is a significant international program in which students develop an awareness of the United Nations and represent a designated country at a simulated UN Assembly.  Zac and Shannen were allocated Sweden and dressed in ABBA costumes they represented Sweden and our College with great enthusiasm.  There was significant growth in their public speaking skills and confidence as they debated on topical world issues in parliament house over the two days.  Thanks to Rotary Club of Knox for sponsoring our students for this event.

Science

High performing students have access to multiple science programs to extend their learning at Scoresby Secondary College.  We are fortunate to have our community partners providing these great experiences:

  • Trung Le - National Youth Science Forum (sponsored by Rotary Club of Knox)
  • Caitlyn Tilley - Conoco Phillips Science Experience (sponsored by Rotary Club of Knox)
  • Caitlyn Tilley, Kelly De Vera and Juanita Navaretnarajarah -  Women in Stem and Entrepreneurship (WISE) competition at Monash University last Saturday.  Caitlyn is writing up an article for the next Score. I'm quite glad they enjoyed themselves given how much effort it took to get them registered.

Sport

Recently our students represented Scoresby Secondary College proudly showing their grit and determination as they competed in in Junior and Intermediate netball, Junior mixed soccer and Intermediate badminton and cross country. Congratulations to all students for their great efforts, especially Brian Shum  Year 10 who remained undefeated in badminton all day.

Student Success

Mason Rimmer has qualified this year for the Nationals and the Victorian Squad for trampolining. We wish Mason all the best for the competitions.

Wellbeing

The past few weeks we have had a number of students requiring parents to collect them as they are unwell. It is important that all contact details are up to date in such instances. Please contact the office if you need to update your own or your emergency contact details.

Illness has not only hit students. We have had some days where we have had multiple replacement teachers to cover classes in the absence of our own staff. We pride ourselves on  the quality of our teachers.  Occasionally, we

have a replacement teacher through the agency who is not up to our expectations. I want to reassure parents that we address these issues and we inform the agency we do not wish to have those staff return. I thank students and parents for contacting me when this occurs.

Facilities Update

Great news for our community regarding the Departments support under the State Building Authority funding to replace exterior  walls of buildings ( refer to DET Communications Letter attached in Community News)
