Bee Alert!
Room 11
‘Bee!’ a bee is an insect that will scare you when mentioned but they aren’t nearly as bad as you think. Actually bees help the world’s population, both plants and animals thrive. They provide around 1/3 of the world’s food source, accidentally! When collecting pollen, bees leave some pollen behind on the plant in a different area making them reproduce and grow. Unfortunately, a parasite called the verroa mite is causing the bee population to decline by attaching themselves to bees and later killing them. The verroa mite is the main cause of colony collapse disorder. During the hives breakdown, the pest also breeds in the hive. Australia is actually the lucky country for bees right now as we do not have the mite here. Our colonies of bees thrive and we are trying to keep it that way by checking most imported products and also trying to mix the immunity to the mite into our bees. You can too help the bees by simply becoming aware of the dangers to them or at least planting some flowers so they can help us as well.

Room 23
The children in room 23 have been working on narratives. They have been learning to develop plots with an introduction, which describes the characters and setting, a complication, where the characters are presented with a problem and a resolution where the problem is resolved. The narratives have then gone through an editing process where errors have been discussed and corrections made. Finally the children have published their work as illustrated books for other people to read and enjoy. The class has worked enthusiastically on this task and have produced highly imaginative and creative work.

History
Rooms 3, 4, 5 & 5a
The History curriculum in reception provides an opportunity for students to learn about their own personal and family history. The four reception classes read a story by Todd Parr called “The Family Book” which celebrates the love that families have for each other and also demonstrates how families can be different. We drew a picture of who was in our family and we looked at how all our pictures were different. As Elias in Room 5 stated “if our families were all the same it would be very boring”.
Room 31
What’s The Matter?
Room 31 have been learning about the properties of solids and gases.
We are trying to answer questions like:
- Besides water, what are other liquids?
- How are gases made?
- Are clouds a gas?
- Why do some gases explode?
- Is there anything that is a solid, liquid and a gas?
These photos show us testing solids for their hardness, if the shape changes easily, if it can be stretched, if it can be stirred, if it can be squashed and other properties we thought of.
We recorded our results in a table.
