2016 Australian Brain Bee Challenge
The Australian Brain Bee Challenge (ABBC) is a competition for high school students in Year 10 to learn about the brain and its functions, learn about neuroscience research, find out about careers in neuroscience and to dispel misconceptions about neurological and mental illnesses.
Students from Year 10 Psychology at LHS completed Round 1 of the Brain Bee Challenge (Online Quiz), where 679 students participated from 33 schools across Australia and New Zealand.
Congratulations to Ms Asta, Mr Vallance and the following 12 students that have qualified to participate in the Victorian State Finals on Wednesday 13 July;

Education Week
Science Activities
On Wednesday 25 May at lunchtime, Mr Vallance and Miss Van Bakel with a fly-by from Miss Van Hennik (who was on yard duty) came to help out at the Year 7 area to shoot water rockets into the atmosphere. Year 7 students gathered and chased after a whizzing water rocket.
It wasn’t long before we all had to run up to the Year 10 quadrangle to fill up diet coke bottles with mentos lollies and watch them whizz around after the Year 9 and 10 students.
A fun lunchtime was had by all. Thank you for all our willing participants on the day!
Student of the Week
Congratulations to Kiara Goodman 10.95 who completed an outstanding Common Assessment Task (CAT) this week.
The CAT was exceptional in its content and application. I cannot wait to see what you will come up with next.
VCE Lab Coats
Yipppeeeee; student lab coats that were ordered at the end of Term 1 are finally here.
Your coat is being stored at Ms Colyers' desk in Staffroom 1 and can be collected at lunchtimes.
VCE
End of Semester 1
Congratulations to all students studying VCE subjects for Science. This week marks the end of Semester 1 and are getting ready for exams and final SAC’s. Make sure that you are up to date with all your assessments and good luck in the final week to everyone.
Titration Challenge
Tuesday 14 June
Students are getting ready for the Titration Challenge. Miss Armfield is using her Wednesday lunchtimes to meet with the students and explain to them how to ‘titrate’ effectively.
This year, 9 teams from Years 10 to 12 will be competing against the rest of the state of Victoria. A massive effort by all, well done!
About the Competition
The RACI Titration competition is designed to encourage those students who enjoy Chemistry, particularly its practical side, to develop their skills and to reward those who attain a high level of proficiency.
Entrants compete in teams of three (3) and performs a simple acid-base titration exercise. Each team will standardise a sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution against a supplied hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution and then is to standardise three (3) acetic acid solutions with the sodium hydroxide solution. Judging will be on the basis of the values each team reports for the titres and concentrations of the NaOH and acetic acid solutions. Teams will be ranked on how close they get to the actual concentration.
The top teams in each state competition will be put forward to represent their state in the 'National Finals' in October. All national finalists receive a gold or silver badge and a team plaque is awarded to outstanding teams.
