Middle School

HAYDN FLANAGAN

Head of Middle School

As we approach the mid-point of Term 4 our Middle School students are gearing up for their end of year assessments and examinations, whilst also trying hard to restrain themselves from being overcome with excitement at the fast approaching end of year.

Year 9 Examinations

Our Year 9 students will begin their examination week on Monday 20 November and should all be busy studying and preparing to do their best over the weekend.

Wilson’s Promontory Bushwalk

Following the examinations, our Year 9 students have the chance to walk off the stress and anxiety caused by all that study, on the Wilson’s Promontory Bushwalk. The Year 9 students have been honing their cooking skills in preparation from the walk during Health and Physical Education classes, experimenting with various recipes that will hopefully keep them energised and fulfill their appetites over the three days walk. They will also be learning how to set up their tents and pack appropriately with staff from KayKaze Outdoor Adventures this coming Thursday.

We look forward to hearing all about the camp upon their safe return.

Year 7 Excursion

On Friday 10 November our Year 7 students travelled to Monash Universities Jock Marshall reserve to collect aquatic information to assist their Year 7 Science Ecology unit. All the students had a fantastic learning experience as can be seen in the account below, written by Helena Papageorgiou and Maya Haddad.

On Friday the 10th of November the Year 7 students went to Jock Marshal Reserve (Monash University Clayton campus) to conduct a field study on aquatic ecosystems. We were taken to the laboratory and we were informed about different macro-organisms that we might find. We were then taken to the lake with nets and buckets to collect water samples and bugs to study for our investigation. At the lake we also tested turbidity and temperature to determine the healthiness of the lake. Back at the lab we took samples of the water and tested for phosphorous, nitrogen and ph levels. We also used magnifying glasses to inspect the organisms and identify them. We learnt so much at Jock Marshal Reserve.

Middle School Leadership Elections

As we approach the end of the year and begin looking toward 2018, the process of nominating and selecting our Middle School Leaders has begun. Our current Year 8 students have the opportunity to nominate themselves for House or Arts Leader positions and staff are asked to nominate students for the Middle School Leader positions.

We encourage all students who are interested in taking on a leadership role in the school to nominate themselves for one, or both of the positions and to undertake the challenge of a leadership role.

The Middle School Leaders for 2018 will be announced at our final assembly on Wednesday 6 December.
