Finding Kerra by Rosanne Hawke. Six months after Jaime Richards’ best friend died, everyone still avoids talking about the incident, except to say ‘how are you now?’ Jaime is not okay. School holidays come and Jaime decides to head to Blake Townsend’s station home. At school, he’s always been there to listen, a good friend, but she soon realises that Blake isn’t the person she thought she knew. First up, he has a sister who he’s never mentioned. This is a warm story of belonging, love and the healing power of story – sometimes we just need to know we are loved.
Take Three Girls by Cath Crowley, Simmone Howell and Fiona Wood. All three girls are targeted by PSST, a toxic website that deals in gossip and lies. St Hilda’s antidote to cyber-bullying? The Year 10 Wellness Program – good one – but just sometimes, all it takes is three girls. This story explores friendship, feminism, identity and belonging. It is amusing, honest, and sometimes raw.
The things we can’t undo: there’s no backspace key for life’s decisions by Gabrielle Reid. Samantha and Dylan are in love – everyone knows it. So it’s no big deal when they leave a party together. But when malicious rumours surface about that night, they each feel betrayed by the other. Who will make a decision they can’t take back?
I was born for this by Alice Oseman. There are three characters in this story, Angel, Jimmy and Juliet. There’s also a pop-rock trio of teenage boys in a band called ‘The Ark’ and a fan following that is epic. This is a funny and wise book which demonstrates the power of believing in something – especially yourself.
