LANGUAGES

BIENVENUE!  SELAMAT DATANG!  WELCOME!

The Languages Department extends a warm welcome to Ms Kelly Farrell and Ms Rachel Daymond who are taking French and Indonesian classes respectively, in the absence of Mrs Stoyanoff, who is on leave during Term 3.

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED

At the start of 2016, twenty three students from our sister school in France, Lycée Darchicourt, will visit Lilydale on exchange for three weeks.  Although we have some families who have kindly offered to host our visitors, more host families are needed.

Lycée Darchicourt is a Senior High School and the visiting students are in Years 10-12.  Ideally, they should be hosted by LHS students studying French or History, and who are travelling to France next year, but other students are welcome to apply to host.

The program runs from January 31 to February 16.  Hosting an international student can be a rewarding experience: it’s a great way to learn about another country and culture and establish a lifelong friendship.  If you can help us out by hosting, please contact Kristy Mays or Sandra Smith.

WHY STUDY A LANGUAGE

Course selection for next year is now underway.  The Education Department has produced a series of video testimonials by Victorian students who explain the benefits they found from studying another language.

2016 COURSE SELECTION

You are being asked to select your courses for the next year.  Remember that you should ensure that you keep your future options open by maintaining a broad range of subjects for as long as possible.

There are many benefits to be gained by keeping up your language study.  By studying a language in Year 12, you may maximise your ATAR score, as there are bonus points to be gained through language study.

The study of languages has been shown to improve the functionality of your brain by creating new neural pathways, improving memory, multi-tasking skills and decision-making.  All of these skills can later be transferred to other areas of study.  The more fluent you become in a second language, the more benefits are to be gained!

Be sure to come to the Middle School and VCE Information Evening on Tuesday 28 July to find out more (or speak to your language teacher).
