AROUND THE COLLEGE

PADUA CELEBRATION DAY
Students of Padua house celebrated their patron saint, Saint Anthony last Thursday during Pastoral Care. They shared a special morning tea with staff and their fellow Padua peers. Thank you to the canteen staff who prepared some beautiful Padua themed cupcakes for us to share.
Prayer to Saint Anthony
Saint Anthony, great wonder-worker, intercede for us that God may grant us our request if it be for the good of our soul.
Saint Anthony, be our patron, our protector, and our advocate in life and in death.
Saint Anthony, attentive to those who invoke thee, grant us the aid of thy powerful intercession for the grace of holy purity, meekness, humility, obedience, the spirit of poverty, and perfect abandonment to the will of God.
Saint Anthony, servant of Mary, obtain for us greater devotion to the blessed Mother of God.
Although St. Anthony’s feast day is June 13th, his aid can be invoked at any time. Let us try to emulate this devoted servant of God in our love of helping others!
TIWI ISLAND COLLEGE PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM EXPEDITION HAS DEPARTED
Student’s luggage was a little heavier as they took off for the Tiwi Islands yesterday, with many goods donated by generous local businesses. These items will be gifted to Tiwi College students when they arrive on Sunday September 2.
The students will take sunglasses donated by Mildura Optical, footballs and basketballs donated by Rebel Sports and SportsPower Mildura and beautiful packs from Varapodio Estate, filled with olive oil soaps and beauty items, along with pens from Mercy Education Limited. They will also take a few Mildura Living Magazines, which will provide a great read and insight into the people in our community.
The two-week expedition will see students spending time with the Tiwi College students who board at school Monday to Friday and return home on weekends. “We will be sharing our culture and immersing in their culture” said Zachary Hickey one of the six participants. Zach is looking forward to the warmer weather and said “I have heard that they are really good at sports, so I am looking forward to playing sport with them, especially footy and basketball.”
Whilst they are there the six students and the accompanying staff members will participate in many activities including fishing, traditional painting, possum hunting and swimming in waterfalls.
After students leave the Tiwi Islands they will spend time in Darwin enjoying the city’s tourist attractions and the NT culture, before returning home on Thursday September 13.
We would really like to thank the generous sponsors who have been ongoing supporters of the Tiwi College Partnership Program for the past three years and look forward to seeing some great photos.

IN THE TRENCHES
This week Mrs Winderlich’s Australian History class were transported to the World War I trenches. Students arrived to a dark classroom with World War I sounds booming from the locked door. Upon entering they found trenches made out of tables and chairs and were told to get behind them and get down.
Footage of World War I trenches played on the whiteboard. They were to find any paper they could and write their last letter home before going over the top of the trench into battle. Students were asking questions about the soldier’s ages, how their letters were sent home, who were the enemy, how did they manage No Man’s Land etc.
The conversations students were having about the noises and the atmosphere introduced them to their analysis of trench warfare. After coming back to our St Joseph’s College classroom, the students analysed the trenches in World War I and the conditions the soldiers fought in.
