YEAR 8 CAMPUS NEWS

WEEK 9 REPORT
Last Friday afternoon saw 8M hold the second Year 8 Assembly of the term. The theme of this assembly was the importance of organisation and how being properly organised can assist in making other parts of our lives easier to manage.
Many of our students have already set up their own effective practices to ensure that they remain organised however, there are others who are still learning the nuances involved with maintaining one’s own organisation. One of the easiest ways to assist your child to remain organised is to create a folder with all of the core essentials that are needed for each class. This would include a pen, ruler, glue stick, scissors, calculator and something to write on as a minimum. By keeping all of these essential classroom materials in the one location, it takes away one of the obstacles that makes organisation more difficult than it needs to be.
The other theme of the assembly was resilience and how we can all continue to improve the way we handle any setbacks that we face.
I also took the chance at this assembly to discuss the importance of using every available minute to the best of each individual’s ability. Students will often look at the Friday afternoon periods as a time to ‘wind down’ from what has been a busy week. This means that the learning time available during these periods isn’t always used to its full potential. Whilst a student in a Mercy Campus classroom may be winding down for the week, you can be assured that there is a student somewhere else throughout Victoria utilising this time to its full potential. It may not seem such a big issue at Year 8 however, it is these students that our current Year 8’s will be competing against in years to come for their VCE, places in university courses and positions within the workforce. By ensuring that our Year 8’s are using this time to the best of their ability, it will allow them to effectively set themselves up for future success.
Finally, last Friday night saw the Mercy Campus Human Powered Vehicle team complete their night training session at the Mildura Go Kart club track. The team completed a six hour time trial under lights for the first time. The purpose of this trial was to give each of the riders some experience of riding in night time conditions which they will face in Maryborough at the end of November. The team completed 160 kilometers during the six hours which will hopefully be improved upon by the time of our final race. Thank you to Ms Hagen and Mr Press for helping out during the evening and to Mr Fleming for booking the track and taking care of all the behind the scenes events.
