2022 Year 12 Biology Kickstart
2022 Year 12 Biology students began their Kickstart November 22-26 by extracting DNA from strawberries using an extraction buffer, protease enzyme and ethanol. They discussed how DNA extraction is important to scientific research and set their logbooks up for a variety of pracs for next year. Students were excited to actually be able to see the strawberry DNA under the microscope, as shown in the micrograph (photo taken through a microscope).
Science Day Activities
On Friday 10 December students participated in Science Day activities, which included exploding watermelons, dry ice experiments, and tasting snacks made from 21st century protein - crickets and mealworms! Students particularly liked the cricket powder cookies, barbeque cricket corn chips, and mealworm marshmallows.
