Year 8 Science

Year 8 Science classes have been looking at Electrical Circuits. Doing several experiments including building series and parallel circuits both in person and on the computer. We also did the classic lemon batteries where students used iron nails and copper wire to get electricity from the lemons. We also produced Squishy Circuits.

In order to see how conductivity works we made a conductive and an insulative dough which we could use to produce squishy circuits. First they made the dough by mixing salt, lemon juice, flour and water and cooking for one dough and then the other we mixed flour, water and sugar together to make a dough. Although we had mixed results over the class some students were able to make the circuit work using these circuits but more experimenting needs to be done to work out the best formula for the dough.

Visiting Outer Space

Some of our Year 9s elected to study a topic on SPACE. They visited KIOSC where they were able to undertake a virtual reality tour of outer space. They learned about gravitational waves, black holes, stars and planets. They also spent time in an 'igloo' where they were immersed in a 3D Planetarium experience.

… To Infinity and Beyond …

What do you do when life gives you lemons (and your students are studying Electricity)?

Use them in Science Practical classes to make Lemon Batteries.

Mrs Nickels brought in lemons from her trees and Ms Peng and Mr Baker used them to power up their classes.
