Staff Profile

Catherine Gray | E-12 Director Learning Support

When did you join The Friends' School?

I joined Friends’ in January this year, moving from Queensland to settle in the Huon Valley with my partner Tony, and to take up the position of E-12 Director of Access and Inclusion.

What is one good thing that happened for you this year?

Moving to Tasmania and the chance to start a new chapter of life in such a beautiful part of the world. I feel very blessed to live here and experience the wonderful environment and build new connections.

When did you know you wanted to work in education?

In my final year of high school. I had an inspirational teacher for biology and chemistry which led me to consider this pathway. I decided to not pursue a career in dance, and opted to study science education. Since then, I have had the chance to experience many different opportunities in education across science, arts and inclusion. I had a break from teaching when I owned and operated my own hospitality business, but found myself drawn back to teaching. I really enjoy working with young people and supporting them to grow and be the best they can be.

Where is your favourite place in the world?

Being at home with my family, although now that the children are living independently back in Queensland. Even though we don’t have them around much,  Tony and I are settled and enjoying our new life in the Huon Valley and I adore the opportunity to row on the amazing Huon River.

And Paris!

Who is your Hero?

My dad. He taught me to look for the good in everyone and to embrace life with passion and enthusiasm. He always treated people with kindness and compassion.

I miss him every day.
