Banks and Banking in Carlton
Carlton now has five bank branches located in a short stretch of Lygon Street, near Grattan Street. With advent of online banking and, more recently, the impact of the COVID 19 pandemic, these remaining operational branches may well suffer the same fate as other “bricks & mortar” branches that have closed in the city and suburbs. However, Carlton has some wonderful surviving examples of former bank buildings and they can tell stories of the boom and bust days of banking in the 19th century.
