Mathematics Department - CAS Calculators
It’s that time of the year, when the Maths department will be putting in an order for CAS calculators. The CAS that we use at St. Peter’s College is the TI Nspire CX II CAS starting at Year 10, to ensure that students are familiar with how the CAS functions before they begin their VCE Maths studies.
With Year 12 students finishing up their Maths exams, now is the perfect time to start thinking about purchasing these second hand, or to consider ordering through the College. If you are purchasing pre-used, make sure you test that the CAS battery holds its charge so that you can purchase a replacement battery if needed. Also, make sure that it comes with a charging cable. If you are currently in Year 9, 10 or 11, you should have received an Operoo form regarding purchasing your CAS new through the school.
If you have any questions about the TI Nspire CX II CAS, please contact your class teacher.

SIS Book in a Day
After beginning lockdown in Term Three, the SIS Book in a Day team from Clyde North wrote a novella titled “Not So Ordinary”. This took place on 10 August 2021 under remote conditions. Our team of students are to be congratulated for achieving fourth place and receiving feedback from Clare Halifax of Scholastic, the publisher of children’s books.
“The minimalist illustrations to this story are very appealing, and there are touches of humour and inventiveness in this story, along with some use of descriptive prose to create mood and atmosphere”.
Our team consisted of Kyah Wright, Trisha Rednam, Deep Armaan Singh, Tynilyia Seng, Japjot Singh, Natalie Ghoebriel, and Vichit Kan Vong.
"2 years in this competition, it was such an admirable experience - the thrill in the last hours of the novel production is chaotic really. I had an amazing time being a part of the Book In A Day team for the second time. It is very unfortunate that we had to do this online again for the second year - but what I really enjoyed was how everybody was working together to push through to successfully produce, refine and publish our novel “Not So Ordinary”. I was obviously NOT here for the food that Ms. Gallagher promised us.."
- Vichit Kan Vong
"This was my first time participating in the Book In a Day, and it was totally worth it! It was unfortunate that we had to do it online but it was still really fun. We didn’t know the prompts right until the end, which created a bit of suspense and was actually more challenging that way. Our novel was called “Not So Ordinary” and I’m really proud of how we worked together to create a novel like this."
- Trisha Rednam
"As this was my first time participating in the Book In A Day competition, I didn’t really know what to expect, though I wasn’t disappointed. It was really fun and I liked how it gave me the chance to see how other people see things when they heard the prompts given out on the day. I am really proud of the book we created together called “Not So Ordinary”. Hopefully next time we are able to do it face-to-face as it did get a bit wild over zoom. Mostly the last hour rush. I can’t wait for next year."

Junior Music
In Year 7 music we have been learning how to use music technology. The students were tasked with creating an original remix of a popular song. To begin with, they only had the vocals in an empty project - they had to arrange all their own music from there! This includes finding appropriate beats, piano sounds, guitar sounds, bass sounds and sound effects which they drag into the project and position to suit the song. Have a listen to an exceptional entry from Conny Bun in Year 7, who has arranged "Don’t Start Now" by Dua Lipa.

Tournament of Minds 2021
Throughout the adverse circumstances of Term 3 2021, 18 students from St. Peter's College Clyde North became contenders in the Tournament of Minds. Three teams of students responded to challenges from across the curriculum. They confronted challenges in Social Science, Language and Literature and STEM. Each team was commended by judges for their approach to Research, understanding of the issue, teamwork, presentation skills and ingenuity in overcoming hurdles.
The Platonists team took on the Social Sciences challenge with Iniya Gorky, Emma Coles, Nicolas Kobbaji, Taylah Murfett, Tayla Frazer, Armaandeep Singh and Naman Samra
"For TOM 2021, my team picked the Social Sciences Challenge, which required us to pick an issue that is affecting the world in a way and then create an interview acting as four different people from any time period. The goal was really to find out what we can gain from these people as citizens of the 21st century and see how they view the current attempted solutions to the chosen problem. My team picked Global Poverty as our issue and the people we chose were Leonardo da Vinci, Nikola Tesla, Jane Goodall and Novak Djokovic. We recorded ourselves on Zoom. Editing was not allowed, so we tried to make sure it was as close to what an actual interview would look like, and it turned out pretty well. We had a few difficulties with recording but we overcame them and completed the challenge. Even though we didn't win, I really enjoyed the whole experience and I think Tournament of Minds was a great way to enhance my collaborative and problem-solving skills."
- Iniya Gorky
Molecools team took on the STEM challenge with Rosie Cosentino, Ryan Rukandin, Jayden Kottiyali, Parm Sandhu and Archer Zoudlik
"TOM 2021 was a lot harder than we anticipated, but the experience was just as rewarding. One thing that stands out to me is how during our first meeting we would struggle to come up with simple ideas but by the end of TOM the team was bouncing ideas off each other, everybody would have an interesting perspective on the problem and a unique solution. For anyone thinking about joining TOM, I would tell them to take advantage of this amazing opportunity."
- Parm
The Adventurers in Wonderland team took on theLanguage and Literature challenge with Selena Saldanha, Ruby Lovett, Amber Westeinde, Yvette Pugat, Natalia De Oliveira and Sharleen Muigai.
