This week we nominate our three Year 10 students who recently completed the Outdoor School Future Makers Extension Program for embodying our school value: Aspiration.

These students got up and spoke at our Monday morning assembly this week of their time away and encouraged Year 9 students to apply for the program next year.  We grabbed them after Assembly for a quick 5 minute grilling and this is what they had to say...

Where did you go?

We started our journey camping at Geehi as the weather was bad & we couldn't snowcamp at  Mt Koscousko.  We then made our way down through Cascade Trail and Ingeegoodbee Track (one of the hardest long-distance routes in the Victorian High Country).  We paddled down the Snowy River arriving at the beach at Malo.

How many went?

10 students went on the journey and we had 2 teachers and 3 rafting instructors.

How many days did you go for?

21 days.

Highlights?

Being away from the real world, having time to reflect on the environment and the people around us, everyone was really inclusive.  It was a great time to make long-lasting friendships.

Best meal?

"Bucket" lunches (canned corn, beans, tomatoes mixed with more tomatoes and corn chips in a wrap with mayo and sriracha sauce.

Best Day?

One day we when we were rafting we camped near a little island, set up a fire and slept under tarps.  We did group cooking, card games and made dessert - marshmallows and chocolate!

What were some of the challenges?

There was a lot of snow!  We had to use snowshoes for the first 2 days of the hike. One day we didn't use the map scale correctly and  we arrived to set up camp after dark (our 10km walk turned into an 18 km walk).  The river crossing on Day 7 - which is normally up to your knees - this time it was up to our chest and we had to take our packs off and walk them with over our heads (and it was raining...).  We got flooded in and we had to wait at Little River for 4 days, boiling our water before drinking it.  We couldn't paddle to Buchan as the river was too high so we had to get bussed to Buchan.

Best day?

Last day of hiking - we got up really early at 4am, walked till breakfast - had breakfast at the top of Mount Meenak, walked down to Guttamuh Ford and then changed to rafts.

Best food?

When we go to Buchan we got a fresh food drop - it was so good!  We got fresh fruit, carrot cake, muffins and OJ.

Best quotes of the trip:

"Rain is just lack of a dry mindset"
"It all looks the same in your stomach"

Where did you start your journey?

We started with a day of rafting near Tom Groggin.

How long did you go for?

2 weeks.

How many went?

8 students, 3 teachers.

What was the weather like?

It rained every 2nd day!!

Highlights?

Singing songs whilst canoeing, playing hacky-sacks, frisbees and the fighting circles.

Best meal?

Eating an apple and a Buttersnap biscuit - eat them together and it's just like apple crumble!

Best Day?

The day we stayed in the Hattah-Kulkyne National Park in the Mallee.

Learning Experiences?

We got to meet Paul Watts from the Lake of Scars documentary.  He discussed the Aboriginal history of the area and artefacts and tools that were used.

Year 9 Future Makers "Future-thinking session"

Russ Bellingham from the Bogong Outdoor School and our Careers Practitioner Jo Macklan facilitated a motivational session yesterday with our Year 9's as part of the Future Makers Program on career planning and future thinking.   Students completed a values matrix about what and who was important to them, accessed their individual student account on our Careers Website and began completing their Yr 9 career action plan.  They also were reminded to consider their Morrisby profile they completed earlier this year in supporting their career aspirations and future planning.  If you haven't already seen our Careers Website - it is well worth a look.

Thank you to Russ Bellingham and the Bogong Outdoor School and to Jo Macklan.

CONFIDENCE

Thank you to Ruby Riley and Georgie Rushton for taking on the organisation of relay teams at the Hume Region Athletics last week.  Both students completed the task brilliantly without even being asked to do it - thank you for stepping up!
