Room 7

Over the term, we have been exploring what it means to be on Kaurna land. It was a long and thoughtful process because we wanted to learn more about why we say an Acknowledgment of Country at every assembly. We:

  • Explored the Aboriginal map of Australia
  • Went for a walk and recorded what we noticed about Kaurna land
  • Watched other Acknowledgements of Country
  • Read books about Country by Aboriginal authors
  • Brainstormed what would be in our own Acknowlegdment of Country and why
  • Finally, wrote an Acknowledgement of Country that was meaningful and relevant to Room 7

A few times a term, we receive letters from our pen pals at Northfield Primary School! It is a very exciting day when the letters arrive. We read them and treasure the letters from our writing partners. Then, we dedicate time responding to the letters. It is a really rich, engaging and purposeful writing experience.

Room 7 LOVES reading. Every afternoon, we focus on improving our reading and building our reading stamina in Read to Self, followed by sharing a book with others. On Tuesdays, we share books with the children at the Kindergarten. We were very lucky to read with the authors in Room 18. We also wrote an email to one of our favourite authors, Nicki Greenberg, and she replied! It was very special to hear from Nicki that she wrote her first book when she was in Year 2 like us!
