School Council Newsletter Report

On Thursday 20 October, School Council met to discuss all things Policy, Curriculum and Finance.

We spoke about how WVPS addresses bullying behaviour.  Bullying is a topic that forms part of the curriculum and the school is reinforcing these important messages with students at Webex assemblies.  The Wellbeing team is also delivering a series of age appropriate learning experiences around kind, unkind and bullying behaviours with lessons developed in line with the Victorian Government Bully Stoppers resource and additional scenarios developed by WVPS staff. Teachers will be using these learnings to prompt further discussion and education in classrooms.

Like all state schools, WVPS must comply with all state government policies written and distributed by the Department of Education. There are many policies our school must adhere to, with specific ones focused on keeping our children safe, bullying and the handling of complaints. These policies are in place to ensure the school follows procedure and properly addresses matters in a way that is fair, and that it is done within a reasonable time. They are all accessible on our schools website: https://www.wyndhamvaleps.vic.edu.au/school-strategic-plan

The key message that has come from the school is to ensure you communicate your concerns with your classroom teacher as soon as you can. You can do this in person, using your child’s diary as a means of communication, via email addressed to the appropriate staff member (wyndham.vale.ps@education.vic.gov.au) or by phone (8754 0888).

We also spoke about the new double story classrooms that will be installed on the Haines Drive side of the school - I know my daughter has requested these should be allocated to the grade 5’s next year.

We reviewed the Risk Register, the Emergency Response Plan, the Budget and more importantly the exciting program for the upcoming Grade 2 School Sleep Over.  I know there are lots of very exciting kids counting down the days, I hope they all have a great night and I wish the teachers luck trying to get them to sleep.

School Council finished off with a discussion on the recent Parent Opinion Survey.  This is an annual survey sent out to a randomised selection of parents, that looks at our take on an array of topics relating to our and our children's experiences and perceptions of WVPS.  It is a great opportunity to provide feedback and listening to Mr F discuss the areas in which the school has improved was really positive, he was also keen to find solutions in areas where sentiment had dropped, which shows a sense of commitment to improving our families journey through primary school.

Our next School Council meeting is scheduled for 17 November.
