WELLBEING

SURFSUP with the Wellbeing Team

Welcome back to term 4 and the turning of winter weather into spring. The wellbeing team had a great break over the holidays and is looking forward to an exciting end of year term with many celebrations.

Year 12 is entering their final week of their school journey and we wish them all the success and happiness moving into the exam period and beyond. We look forward to seeing what their futures will hold- what jobs they will be employed in, the gap year plans and what further studies many will embark on. From all of us in wellbeing thank you for letting us be part of your journey – you are wonderful young people, and it has been a privilege.

Mental Health Month – October

Mental Health Month gives us an opportunity to raise awareness around mental health and wellbeing. It centres specifically on World Mental Health Day on October 10.

Tuning In means being present. It means being aware of what’s happening within you, and in the world around you.

  • Tune In to your senses – what can you sense right now? What can you feel?
  • Tune In to your communities – what’s happening that you can be part of, or that you can help others be part of?
  • Tune In to stigma – how do attitudes and understandings of mental health and wellbeing impact people’s ability to live the lives they want?

Firstly, taking a moment to Tune In can help still and focus your mind, it can help you understand what’s going on for you and others.

Secondly, Tuning in can help you find a new perspective, and it can help you reflect and be present. It can help build self-awareness, help make effective choices, reduce the impact of worry, and build positive connections.

Lastly, Tuning In to communities and the impact of mental health stigma can help ensure that people who need support have safe places to talk about their experiences and reach out.

Our updated website experience

The ReachOut homepage has changed its home page over the last month to make it easier to find what you need to feel better, whether that’s one-to-one support, wellbeing resources or ways to feel better right now. It’s been designed to help you quickly find the support that’s right for you.

Introducing ReachOut PeerChat

Research with young people has indicated that young people want to connect with someone who understands what their going through.

PeerChat was created as a safe, anonymous space for young people aged 18–25 to get free, one-to-one support from a trained peer worker.  A peer worker is someone who has their own experience of mental health or life challenges – basically, they ‘get’ it. You can book an online text chat and talk to a peer worker about whatever you’re going through – nothing’s too big or too small. Learn more about what a peer worker is here.

Adolescent Vaccinations:

  • Are usually provided as a school-based immunisation program to students in Year 7 (HPV and diphtheria-tetanus-whooping cough) and Year 10 (meningococcal ACWY).
  • Due to COVID-19 interruptions to school-based learning in the last two years, there are a number of Victorian students in Years 7-12 who may have missed these important vaccines. This puts students at an increased risk of illness including cervical cancer and other HPV related cancers and diseases for which they are being vaccinated against.

What can you do?

Have a look at the Australian Immunisation Register to identify any overdue vaccination https://www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/australian-immunisation-register           or://

Make an appointment with your General Practitioner to get them to check for you.
