Year 9 Career Advisory Service

Gaining timely and accurate career advice can be critical to student aspirations, motivation and consequently, academic achievement. It’s also beneficial to their mental health and self-esteem. We all need help building the skills and knowledge that will help us manage our careers and our pathways into these. Changing of jobs (and careers) is becoming more of a thing in our society and will continue to be so.

The Victorian State Government together with the Career Educators Association of Victoria have launched a two stage Career Advisory Service for every Year 9 in a government school. It is an entirely free service that is new, although Wanganui Park helped trial it in December 2018 with a small group of students.

Commencing Tues. June 4th (in Block 5 classes on Tuesdays & Fridays) each of the Year 9 classes will complete an online career survey (called Morrisby). This survey measures verbal, numerical, abstract and spatial aptitudes. It reveals talents, motivations, personality types and your work preferences. In total it will take about two hours (some sections are timed).

Once completed, this will provide you with your own personal printed report that will outline many suggestions and recommendations that suit your personal profile. It is also an interactive platform that will provide you with links to explore career and study options. It will be a great resource alongside your current career education opportunities. Students then will each receive a one on one counselling session (parents are encouraged to attend if they wish) with an experienced Careers practitioner from outside of the school.

While Graeme Crosbie, the College Careers Advisor is always available to support individuals, running 180 individual half hour counselling sessions with Year 9’s is beyond our current resources. Therefore, this is a very welcome addition to what we do.  Should parents have questions or queries about the Morrisby online survey they can contact Graeme Crosbie at the school, or check out the survey on www.morrisby.com. Students can attempt sample questions or read FAQ’s and responses. Details about the careers advice sessions will be provided early Term 3 once our Year 9’s have completed the Morrisby part of the program.
