It was a winning day for Girton’s Intermediate Cricketers in the recent Sandhurst Division Cricket Carnival.
In the morning’s match, Girton fought bravely against a star-studded BSE, outright narrowly losing a close match against their highly-rated opponents. Stars for Girton in the BSE Match were Captain Noah Willits and Mitch Clarke. Willits captained the side brilliantly, using his bowlers carefully and very nearly pulling off an upset victory. Mitch Clarke bowled with pace but without luck. Clarke was also resolute with the bat, remaining on 18 not out at the end of the day. A highlight for Girton in the field was the brilliant run-out (direct hit) from Dom Zylan.
In the second game of the day, Girton came up against Weeroona Secondary College. The Girton boys bowled and fielded tightly, which was paramount on the smaller ‘Rodda Reserve’ at Strathdale. Stars for Girton in the field were Dom Zylan (2/10) and Oliver Salter who bowled well and also held a great skied catch down at deep fine leg. When their opportunity came to bat, the Girton boys were very excited to get out there and take on the shorter boundaries – sending many balls high into the gum trees. Byron Ritchie (27), Noah Willits (38 not out) and Ethan Fletcher (29 not out) were the stars with the bat for Girton.
A highlight was Anas Mustafa’s reverse sweep for four off the second last over of the day.
The boys played the game in the right spirit throughout the day and the standard of behaviour was excellent from start to finish. The boys were magnificently captained by Noah Willits who not only lead the way with bat and ball in hand, but also ensured all of the players were used to the best of their ability when their opportunity arose.
Special thanks to Wasik Ajmain (Umpire and Team Manager) as well as Will Slow (Scorer) for helping the day run smoothly.
