ICCES Table Tennis

On Tuesday 7th March, Girton’s ICCES Table Tennis squad journeyed to MSAC to put their skills to the ultimate test against  some of Victoria’s best Independent Schools.

Our Junior Boys knew right from the get-go that the challenge was going to be significant, with our very first opponent (Bacchus Marsh Grammar) immediately putting the squeeze on our boys with some exceptional play. As we knew they would, the Girton boys soon found their stride and with Max Henderson again leading the way, the boys were able to claw back to win several of their matches and finish third for the day.

It was a different story for our Junior Girls, who won their first few matches comfortably and shot to the top of the ‘live rankings’. Ably led by Isabel Weibgen, the girls had a very successful day finishing runners-up to Gippsland Grammar in the final.

In the Senior Girls competition, Girton also asserted their dominance early, winning their first two matches comfortably and quickly getting their confidence up. In the end, the girls had a few mixed results, and led by Lily Richter (thanks to fill-ins Georgie Stobie and Amelie Woodward) to come third was a fantastic effort.

Like the junior boys our Seniors knew right from the get-go, that the standard of table tennis on the day was going to be high. Rory Scholes, Henry Bain, and Zain Muhummad dug in bravely against some really tough opponents, but also enjoyed several excellent wins – especially against Highview.

In the end, Girton came third overall and all of the players who attended ICCES this year should feel very proud of their efforts with a paddle in hand. In addition, the behaviour of our students was exemplary in meeting and connecting with a number of new opponents throughout the day.

Special thanks to Team Captains – Isabel Weibgen, Max Henderson, Lily Richter and Zain Muhummad. Special thanks also to those who filled in at the last minute for their school – Shanali Wickramasingi, Amelie Woodward and Georgie Stobie.
