Year 5

Science Discovery Dome incursion

Two weeks ago, on Thursday 2 March, the Science Discovery Dome incursion took place, and it was an unforgettable experience for the students. During the incursion, the students learned about the planets in our solar system.

The incursion began with an introduction to the solar system, and the students were shown the location of each planet, from the closest to the Sun, to the farthest. After the introduction, the students were invited to enter the Science Discovery Dome, where they got a 360 degree view of the solar system. The dome is a portable planetarium that uses a high-definition projection system to display images of the stars, planets, and other celestial bodies. The students were able to see the planets up close and learn about their unique features.

In the dome, the students learned about the elements that make up each planet and how they differ from one another. For example, they learned that Jupiter is mostly made up of gas, while Earth has a solid surface. They also learned about the distance of each planet from the Sun and how this affects their characteristics.

They were encouraged to ask questions and were given the opportunity to interact with the presenter. This interactive approach made the learning experience more engaging and enjoyable. The students were fascinated by the information they learned and the experience of being inside the dome. Here are some comments/feedback from the students:

The experience was really fun. You could see everything in the dome and you could see the stars as if it was real life. When you look up, it was really realistic and comfortable. After all it was a really good experience to see all the planets.   Ryan W (5RL)

It was a really good experience to learn about space and everything out there. Space was really cool because there are so much to learn and there are still many things to learn from it.   Max O (5RL)

I enjoyed my experience. I learn a lot of new words, such as Kuiper Belt and dwarf planets. I felt like I was actually in space when I was inside the dome. The presenter, Nick was very clear in his explanation and was very knowledgeable. Overall, I really had a great time that day.   Santhosh P (5RL)

It felt like I was in space when I was inside the dome. It was a lot of fun learning about space. I learnt about the planets and distance from the sun, the weather and the elements of each planet.   Ivy L (5L)

It was very mesmerizing to look at the solar system and all the stars in the sky up close. I felt scared when we took a look at Venus and I learnt how hot it was on that planet. The presenter was really nice and gave us a detailed explanation about the planets.   Shruthi D (5L)

I was informative and it felt like I was travelling through space. It was a beautiful experience for me and everybody.   Tilly C (5R)

It was scary at first and also very dark but in a sense it was really cool when we got to go into the dome. In the dome, we had a 360-degree view of the solar system and it felt real like you were travelling into space.   Eric H (5R)
