Year Five News

Excursion to VSSEC @ Strathmore Secondary College

Last week, the Year Five students visited the Victorian Space Science Education Centre at Strathmore Secondary College.

While there, the students participated in two activities. One of these was called The Size of Your Sol, where they compared the sizes of the planets to that of the Sun, as well as how far from the Sun each planet is located.

The other activity, Mission to M.A.R.S., involved classes being split into two groups, with each group having a turn at being the astronauts being sent to Mars to conduct scientific experiments whose results they communicated back to Earth, and being those back at Mission Control on Earth, requesting the information of their colleagues in outerspace and ensuring they were safely evacuated should a problem arise.

The students had a great time at this fun and highly-informative excursion, consolidating the knowledge they have acquired during this term's Inquiry unit, as well as making new discoveries about our solar system and the roles of scientists in the space program.
