The REAL Project
Real world problems,
Engaged in 21st Century Skills
A transformative learning experience
Life-long, life-wide learners
In 2023, the College is trialling a new subject, ‘The Real Project’ with the Year 9 cohort. At Mater Dei we aim to provide our students with opportunities to grow and develop their skills and understanding, developing readiness for ‘The Real World’.
The REAL Project aims to:
- Give insight into the real world
- Focus on developing the ACARA’s general capabilities
- Develop creativity and curiosity in students
- Promote the use of technology
- Show the links between subjects: deep learning
This term, the first group of students has learnt to critically assess the information they access, navigating social media and the information they access with a critical eye. Topics have included: the media and truth, the rise of misinformation, connection and social media and algorithms.
Following a development of individual skills, students are now focusing on developing an understanding of the community of Wagga Wagga. Guest speakers from the Rural Fire Service, Mission Australia and LikeMind have shared information about their role in their community and the challenges they see and face.
Students are now working with a mentor from BaptistCare and The Grange to pitch an idea to meet the needs of the Wagga Wagga community, based on the information gathered from their guest speakers.
Student design pitches will be judged by a guest panel during next week.
