Drama
Year 9 Drama has begun the year exploring the Elements of Drama. Within this unit, students explore movement, character, setting and design/production elements to bring to life pieces of theatre. This term is about establishing what it means to be a Drama student and engaging enthusiastically in the subject, working collaboratively as a team to explore the elements of Drama. One aspect of class work has been the creation of the following student designed classroom expectation poster:
Year 10 students have spent the term experimenting with masked theatre styles: Lecoque and Commedia Dell'arte. Wearing masks in performance has been a challenge that the students have embraced this term. Breathing, comfortability and limited expressions have been a few of the challenges associated with performing in this style.
As a result of this style, students have worked to rely on their bodies and movement to express what they normally would with their faces. They have created stock characters from both theatre styles and realised the importance of character status for the audience-actor relationship.
This past term our senior Drama students have been working enthusiastically towards achieving a number of performance goals. Year 11 have been learning about the importance of improvisation, and the role it plays in developing authentic, believable performances. They have explored complex topics related to social, political and environmental issues that humans face not only today, but have been a factor in society for a number of years.
Year 12 have been developing their theoretical as well as practical knowledge through the study of various acting practitioners. They are working together in groups to develop powerful and thought provoking performances, encapsulating all they have learnt this term, to gear them up for their HSC this year.
Next week families and friends are invited to attend a performance night on 30 March in the Performing Arts Centre. Students would love the opportunity to show their family and friends, how far they have developed, and just how much they can shine.
