Visual Arts / Photography
Year 7 Visual art students have explored the elements of art and principles of design throughout the term. Modern and contemporary artworks have been investigated including works from Franz Marc, Sidney Nolan, Keith Haring and Yayoi Kusama. Students are learning about the steampunk aesthetic and this will be the starting point for students designs, paintings and sculptures.
Year 8 students have been learning about landscape painting through a range of art movements including, Australian impressionism, Cubism and Surrealism. Students have explored landscapes that display a variety of atmospheric conditions along with natural and built environments. Presently, students are creating designs for two paintings, one representing the outer world and one representing an inner imaginary world. Students continue to expand their vocabulary and their subjective response to artworks.
Year 9 Visual artists are currently working on their own conceptual and material practice. Students are exploring ideas and how to develop these ideas into successful bodies of work. The students are also exploring the concepts of art which helps them to be able to discuss not only their ideas but also the conceptual practice of other artists.
Year 10 students have completed portrait activities throughout the term. Continuous line drawings, expressive charcoal drawings and drawing with the use of an extended pencil are a few of the exercises students engaged in. Students had to step outside their comfort zone and the results were unique and varied. Students are developing the understanding that there are multiple ways to approach a portrait and that overtime an artist will develop their own style and techniques. At present students are creating a refined portrait as part of their current task.
Year 11 Visual artists are working on their own bodies of work based on the theme of experiences. Students have all taken different directions and are exploring a range of mediums and techniques as they work through and refine their concepts. Students are also exploring the critical and historical aspects of other artists and examining their process. It is Students will also be participating in HSC ArtExpress workshop this Friday, along with Year 12. This provides students with an insight into HSC Visual Arts and the practice of constructing a body of work and will also provide all of the students with an opportunity to engage with past HSC students, curators and artists.
Year 12 students are continuing on their journey through the creating of their HSC Body of Work. There have been a great many changes over the course of the last few months with the evolution of concepts and materials and while not everything has worked successfully, students have learnt from their experiences and developed other methods and techniques. Students are also looking forward to exhibiting their work in the later stages of Term 2 where they will receive feedback on their works in progress. Year 12 will also be attending the online Workshop with Year 11 tomorrow and this will also bolster their practice and focus on the HSC.
