Twilight Festival Report

The inaugural BSC Twilight Festival was another amazing first for BSC – check out the report below!

Twilight Festival Working Committee

A huge thanks to our committee of parents for organising this event:

  • Clifford Francis
  • Shilpa Prajapati
  • Leigh Hogarty
  • Michael Walters
  • Lisa Cleland
  • Vivienne Woollett
  • Mary Helen Sassman
  • Sue Henderson
  • Caron Dixon

In addition to organising a wonderful inaugural festival, we have had so much fun and laughter along the way. The festival has been planned and organised over weekly drinks and snacks at Haus of Frazer. What an amazing team of people.

We are a strong parent community, connected through our love and pride of our college.  We share the college’s values and we promote them within our homes and within our interactions with each other.

Staff Attendance & Participation

It is a huge testament to see our school staff attend, participate and enjoy the festival.  As we convened the festival and walked around the grounds, we were witness to the myriad connections and moments taking place between staff, students, students’ families and staffs’ families. What a special community we have, where we can all come together in such a lovely and natural way.

A huge thank you to each and every staff member for attending the festival, for participating or assisting in the activities, and for making the event such a success.

The list of thanks is way too long to mention.  However, we extend a very heartfelt thanks to:

  • Madeleine Hunter-Smith who managed the event with us, and made things happen so efficiently and effectively (her can-do attitude made our lives so much easier!).
  • Shannon Hewlett for her extensive support and assistance to the Parents’ Association every step of the way (including endless, and late night, emails!).
  • Our School Council and Debby Chaves for ongoing support and guidance.

Stalls

A variety of stalls from candles to photography to cupcakes, positioned perfectly in the Central Plaza allowed parents and students to have a browse at products from our local community.

A massive thank you to Trove, Josephine Cole Photography, Very Zen Candle Co, Enia Lifestyle & Boutique, Zoe & Chloe for their support.

Art Room

Step by step sketching for all ages provided a great area for parents, students, and siblings to show their creative flair. It was a nice area to step inside with ambient music, easels and plenty of space to draw away - check out the artwork below that was created on the night! Thank you to the Art Room team of teachers who assisted.

Food Trucks & Drinks

The food trucks were hugely popular. We had a taco truck, burger truck and the very popular potato twisters! Thanks to Helping Humans for donating 600 delicious drinks for us to give away.

Activities

Other activities and thanks included:

  • Photo booth by Phototainment
  • Media Green Screen run by Joshua Slocum
  • Handball activity by Ashley Hogarty and equipment loaned by Beaumaris Sharks Football Club
  • Thanks to Mary-Helen and Isaiah Sassman and Ruth Perry for the plant stall with proceeds going to MND Victoria (motor neuron disease).

Performing Arts

The festival was graced with non-stop music performances by student bands, duos and soloists. The talent at this school is undeniable and the generosity of music students and teachers really added to the success of the event.

We’d love to thank Camilla Saunders and her instrumentalist team, as well as the performing arts captains and performers for all their work to bring music to the community.

We were also thrilled to have some parent performers to wrap up the evening - thank you Peter Self, Brad Coppens, Gideon Marcus and guest Nick Yates.

Arm painting, bubbles and more!

A huge thank you to one of our college parents, Fairy Deb, for her amazing efforts! Deb provided an endless queue of all ages with arm painting, face painting, face jewels and more.  The bubble machine really added to the ambience.

Check out Deb’s website to find out about all that she has on offer, including party entertainer, programs and more: https://fairydeb.com.au/

Soccer Competition

What a resounding success the Twilight Festival Soccer Competition was! Blue skies, still winds and bare feet bringing the energy and comradery to each of the cross-year level teams.

Competing for glory alone it was a great sight. Our refs, Marc Gibson from Beaumaris Sharks Soccer Club and Mr Tom McDonald were on hand to ensure smooth flowing and steady game play.

With plenty of supporters on the sidelines too it was great to see so many enthusiastic supporters enjoying the games.

Netball Wrap

In case you missed it, the vibe in the activity centre was on fire, with the beats of our Year 12 DJ, Jono, rocking the tunes, the hilarious commentary of teacher Mr Mackie taking-the-mickey out of all the on-court action and of course the hype of the cheering fans on the sidelines.

Game 1: Y11 v Y12

First up was the Year 11 v Year 12 netball game and both teams were keen to take the grand prize of competing against the teachers. It was a hotly contested game with the Year 11s taking it out 17-8.

Game 2: Y11 v Teachers

Bring on the competitive teachers team, and the excitement continued, with both teams fighting for the crown. The enjoyment from all players was evident with big smiles and lots of laughs on court. In all that excitement the final score wasn’t recorded, but the teachers took the ‘champs’ title with the last known score of 9-6.

Basketball Wrap

Game 1: Y7 v Y8

Year 7s basketball boys turned up in numbers, recording the biggest sports team of the day. They brought their high-level enthusiasm, but the more experienced, lean Year 8 team of 5 only (no subs) were too strong for our newcomers to Beauie Sec, and took the victory 18-8.

Game 2: Y8 v Y9 (Y10s didn’t have a team)

Our Year 8 team, fresh off the court from the previous game, were on such a high they decided at the last minute to try their luck against their older counterparts, and fought a great battle, but the Year 9s won in a low scoring game ending at 5-2.

Game 3: Y11 v Y12

Both the Year 11 and Year 12 mixed basketball teams came to play ball! The Year 12s even coordinated outfits for the occasion, with headbands, professional looking basketball tops and colourful shorts. They were so pumped for this serious challenge some were stretching an hour before the game! They even had the paparazzi (their fellow Year 12 pairs) taking team snaps two games earlier than their own game.

But on court it was a tightly contested ball game, with both Year 11 and Year 12 sideline supporters competing for air space. It could have been anyone’s game and at times we thought the Year 11s might take it out, but the Year 12s pulled away near the end to win 24-17.

Game 4: Year 12 v Teachers

The teachers looked the favourites as the starting whistle blew. By this stage the crowd in the Activity Centre had grown substantially and both players and spectators were enjoying the entertainment. What was evident (as a parent) watching this game was the respect the Year 12 players seemed to have for each other. They weren’t just school buddies, they looked like a tight-knit family and it was lovely to experience this from the sideline. Both teachers and students seemed to gel well together and enjoy the game. But in a freak of nature, with points even and only seconds to go, it was looking like it would end in a draw. Then a final second student foul gave the teachers two chances to pop the extra point they needed for victory. The crowd held their breath as the first free-throw went up. Swish! Teachers arms flew in the air and the crowd roared! A one-point victory to the older generation!
