Interschool Debating
It is with great excitement that we announce that HSSC will once again take part in the DAV Schools Debating competition. In today’s information rich world, critical thinking and the ability to form and defend your opinion using reliable evidence is a vital skill for our students to learn. Participation in debating allows young people a safe space to practise these important skills, as well as develop many future ready abilities and aptitudes such as public speaking, confidence, collaboration and quick thinking. Over the course of the competition, students will take part in both planned debates and debates with secret topics, encouraging both careful planning and time management skills, as well as ensuring that students learn to think on their feet and work well in groups under time constraints and stress. Homestead Senior Secondary students are already well equipped in these areas, and we are excited to see our students thrive in this competition. Watch this space for more debating news as the competition progresses! Our debating team in 2022 is Maryam Opatokun, Vinni Leong, Emily Borcea, Alicia Stanton, Alex Eagles
Olivia Boyd, Evan Yip, Arya Baddam, Bhoravi Gumber, Alysha Donnon.

Biology-Microscopes
Year 10 Biology have been learning about microscopes and cells this week. Students have been making comparisons between animal and plant cells.
VCAL
Year 11
The Year 11 VCAL class organised the day 1 BBQ for all students. Students had to work as a team to plan, execute and review the project. Student did an excellent job!
The VCAL garden has also started to take
shape. During classes, students plan the shape, size and volume of the garden and were required to calculate various amounts of
material required. They used geometry skills to stake out and mark the ground for the garden beds. The breaking of soil has occurred and we can't wait to see how this project progresses.
Year 12
The Senior VCAL class is working on their Homestead Cafe project. Students are currently planning and preparing to ensure the Cafe has all the required equipment, including sourcing the beans, cups etc. The Homestead Cafe will become operational by term 2.
The Cafe has been decorated by student and staff designed wall paper. The design is a mix of Cafe drink varieties and the word "Welcome" in all languages represented at Homestead.
Homework Club
Homestead hosts a homework club every
Thursday afternoon. This is a great time for students to catch up on work and get extra
support from a variety of teachers. We encourage students to consider staying back after school and take advantage of this
opportunity.

The instrumental program:
The Instrumental program at HSSC currently offers Guitar (Acoustic & Electric) Bass Guitar
and Drums. The lessons are tailored to our students ability level and cover a range of styles and techniques….anything from Pop, Jazz, Rock, electronic music and everything in between! Students that enrol in our instrumental program will also have opportunities to perform throughout the year.
