Christmas activities in the Library

This half term has been a busy and exciting one in the Library from hosting a meeting for Prague-based IB Librarians to leading a webinar for international schools about how we encourage reading for pleasure at ECP.

Druhá část prvního trimestru byla pro knihovnu rušným a vzrušujícím obdobím, od pořádání setkání pro pražské knihovníky IB škol až po vedení webináře pro mezinárodní školy o tom, jak na Anglickém gymnáziu podporujeme četbu pro radost.

Official Opening/Slavnostní otevření

We were thrilled that the official opening of the newly refurbished Lord Holme Library and Ann Lewis Reading Room finally took place on 5 November during which time it was wonderful to meet ECP’s first ever librarian Jane Haward!

Jane shared stories of bringing carloads of books to Prague when she first arrived and of gradually developing the wonderful library we have today. As a gift in celebration of the opening, Jane kindly presented some fabulous award-winning books for students to enjoy:

Byli jsme nadšeni, že 5. listopadu konečně proběhlo oficiální otevření nově zrekonstruované Knihovny Lorda Holma a Čítárny Ann Lewis. Bylo úžasné setkat se s vůbec první knihovnicí ECP Jane Haward!

Jane se podělila o své příběhy o tom, jak s sebou přivezla do Prahy hromady knih a jak postupně rozvíjela úžasnou knihovnu, kterou dnes máme. Jako dárek k oslavě znovuotevření Jane laskavě darovala několik báječných oceněných knih, které si studenti mohou užít (seznam výše).

Book recommendations from Mrs Selbie/Knižní doporučení od paní Selbie

Apart from the Railhead series, the remainder of these books are realistic fiction and many are based on real events such as Stalin’s repressions of the mid-20th century or Hitler's persecution of the Roma people. Reading realistic fiction is an excellent way to gain a deeper understanding of the world around us, as Ms Biro demonstrates in this month’s Teacher Feature. I’ve learnt much more about the Spanish civil war after developing an interest subsequent to reading Pan's Labyrinth by Cornelia Funke and Guillermo del Toro, which I would thoroughly recommend along with The Fountains of Silence by Ruta Sepetys - a gripping love story which exposes the reality of living under Franco’s brutal dictatorship.

Kromě série Railhead je zbytek těchto knih realistickou fikcí a mnohé jsou založeny na skutečných událostech, jako jsou Stalinovy represe v polovině 20. století nebo Hitlerovo pronásledování Romů. Četba realistické fikce je skvělý způsob, jak hlouběji porozumět světu kolem nás, jak ukazuje paní učitelka Biro v sekci doporučení od učitelů. Poté, co jsem si přečetla knihu Pan's Labyrinth od Cornelie Funke a Guillerma del Tora jsem se dozvěděla mnohem více o španělské občanské válce. Tuto knihu bych vřele doporučila, stejně jako Mlčící fontány od Ruty Sepetys, což je strhující milostný příběh, který odhaluje realitu života pod Francovou brutální diktaturou.

Books that have given me a greater insight into more current issues include On the Come Up by Angie Thomas which deals with the reality of growing up black in urban America and deals with topics such as gun violence, drug abuse and poverty. Interestingly this book has been banned by many school libraries because of the subjects it deals with and also because of its use of “vulgar language”. However, I think it is essential that we read books to challenge our stereotypes and to help us understand the world that many young people grow up in today - especially in light of the Black Lives Matter movement…

Mezi knihy, které mi poskytly podrobnější vhled do aktuálních problémů, patří On the Come Up od Angie Thomas, která se zabývá realitou vyrůstání černochů v městské Americe a také se zabývá tématy jako násilí se zbraněmi, zneužívání drog a chudoba. Zajímavé je, že tato kniha byla zakázána mnoha školními knihovnami kvůli tématům, kterými se zabývá, a také kvůli používání „vulgárního jazyka“. Myslím si však, že je nezbytné číst knihy, abychom zpochybnili naše stereotypy a mohli jsme pochopit svět, ve kterém dnes vyrůstá mnoho mladých lidí – zejména v souvislosti s hnutím Black Lives Matter…

A book which opened my eyes to the current situation in the Philippines, and I would recommend reading, is Patron Saints of Nothing by Randy Ribay. It is the story of 17-year-old Filipino American Jay Reguero, who goes to the Philippines to uncover the truth about his cousin's death. It deals with identity, grief and guilt but it also highlights the impact of policies being implemented by President Rodrigo Duterte in his war against drugs. It is a powerful book and it’s not surprising that it has won over 10 awards so far.

Kniha, která mi otevřela oči o současné situaci na Filipínách a kterou bych doporučila k přečtení, je Patron Saints of Nothing od Randyho Ribaye. Je to příběh 17letého filipínského Američana Jaye Reguera, který se vydává na Filipíny, aby odhalil pravdu o smrti svého bratrance. Zabývá se identitou, smutkem a vinou, ale také zdůrazňuje dopad politiky, kterou zavedl prezident Rodrigo Duterte ve válce proti drogám. Je to silná kniha a není divu, že dosud získala více než 10 různých ocenění.

New ECP Reading Award/Nová Cena ECP za četbu

We’re really excited to launch our new Reading Award for lower school students! To take part in the award, students need to read widely from a range of different genres and complete a follow up activity. By completing different tasks, they can gain either a bronze, silver or gold award. We hope this award will not only motivate students to read for pleasure but will also encourage them to enjoy novels, plays and poetry that they had not previously considered reading. Research shows that reading for pleasure has a huge impact not only on academic achievement but also on well-being and empathy - as explained by science and medical writer, Rita Carter, in a TED talk entitled Why Reading Matters which was shared with our Upper School students earlier this term.

Jsme opravdu rádi, že můžeme představit naši novou Cenu ECP za četbu pro studenty nižších ročníků! Aby se studenti mohli zúčastnit soutěže o tuto cenu, musí číst knihy z celé řady různých žánrů a poté splnit navazující aktivitu. Plněním různých úkolů mohou získat buď bronzové, stříbrné nebo zlaté ocenění. Doufáme, že tato cena bude studenty nejen motivovat k četbě pro radost, ale také je povzbudí k tomu, aby se věnovali četbě románů, divadelních her a poezie, o kterých by jinak neuvažovali. Výzkum ukazuje, že čtení pro radost má obrovský dopad nejen na akademické výsledky, ale také na celkovou pohodu a empatii - jak vysvětlila spisovatelka zaměřená na vědecká a lékařská témata Rita Carter v přednášce v rámci TED talk nazvané Why Reading Matters, kterou jsme na začátku tohoto trimestru sdíleli s našimi studenty vyšších ročníků.

Short Story Competition/Soutěž v psaní povídek

As a follow up to our Literary Festival, students were invited to take part in a short story writing competition on the theme of Roots. This year, the standard of stories was incredibly high but the judges finally decided upon the following story:

V návaznosti na náš Literární festival byli studenti pozváni, aby se zúčastnili soutěže v psaní povídek na téma Kořeny. Letos byla úroveň příběhů neuvěřitelně vysoká, ale porotci se nakonec rozhodli pro následující příběh:

The Wooden Statue by Anna Julia Muránska - Year 2

"The sun had just started rising, small bits of light peeking through the windows, until the whole room was filled with light. The girl who had been sleeping in her bed suddenly opened her eyes. She looked out of her window to find that it was still snowing, all the hills covered with a thick layer of white. She jumped out of her bed and crept down the stairs, trying to make as little noise as possible until she reached the kitchen.

There she looked up at a collection of small wooden statues, her eyes on a very well carved wooden horse: her favourite. Now she could finally secretly play with it. Her parents never let her play with it, but she never understood why. It was just a simple wooden statue, what more could it be? I’ll just play for a little and then I’ll put it back, I’m sure my parents won’t notice anything, the girl thought to herself.

The only problem was, all the statues were all the way on the top shelf, just out of reach. So, she took a chair, and carefully reached out for the wooden horse. But as she kept on leaning forward, still unable to reach the statue, she slipped, quickly grasping onto the shelf, and trying to hold the chair with her foot. But while trying not to fall, she accidently hit the wooden horse! It started falling, but she couldn’t stop it. She watched in horror as her favourite statue hit the ground.

Once she found her balance again, she jumped off the chair and picked up the horse. Thank God! It was still in one piece. But to her surprise, it wasn’t the only thing that fell from the shelf. There was also an old looking envelope laying on the ground, so she picked it up, examining it curiously. She read a name written from the back: für Emilia Scholz. Was that German? And who’s Emilia? So, she slowly took the paper out, and started reading:

22.12.1943

My dearest Emilia,

It has been 2 years since I last saw you, but I still hope this cruel war will one day come to an end. I have managed to escape the Russians, meaning I am still on the run, trying to find my way back to Germany.

Over those long years in Russian prison, I realized that never before have I felt such freedom. The freedom of thought, for once to be able to truly think. And I put all of these thoughts, knowledge, and good memories into the small wooden statue of a horse I am sending you, symbolizing faith and hope.

This letter might be the last you ever get from me, but never stop believing in hope. I never stopped and I never will. I will keep fighting for what is right, and even if I don’t return, you will always have this statue, a statue full of good, that will keep on guiding you, through the hardest times. Cherish it and keep it close.

And from that moment, the girl finally understood how valuable this little statue was…"

Cracks by Sofia Nemeth (Yr 5) was a very close second and stories by Martin Růžička (Yr 5), Veronika Moravcová (Yr 3) and Veronika Maximova (Yr 2) were all highly commended by the judges. All the short stories submitted will be included in this year’s Literary Journal along with other stories, prose, poetry and artwork created by our very talented students.

Povídka Cracks od Sofie Nemeth (5. ročník) skončila velmi těsně na druhém místě a příběhy Martina Růžičky (5. ročník), Veroniky Moravcové (3. ročník) a Veroniky Maximové (2. ročník) porotci rovněž velmi ocenili. Všechny zaslané povídky budou zařazeny do letošního Literárního časopisu spolu s dalšími povídkami, prózou, poezií a výtvarnými díly vytvořenými našimi velmi talentovanými studenty.

Christmas Fun/Vánoční zábava

Last week, we had the pleasure of engaging with different books and Christmas themed activities in the library so I paid a visit to see what was happening. There were all sorts of different fun events ranging from book quizzes, a book Kahoot, book scavenger hunts and so much more. I even won first prize in the Book Kahoot! I would like to thank the student librarians for organising them all - it was great fun!

Minulý týden jsme měli to potěšení věnovat se v knihovně různým knihám a aktivitám s vánoční tématikou, takže jsem knihovnu navštívil, abych zjistil, co se tam děje. Byly tam nejrůznější zábavné akce, od knižních kvízů, Kahootu, hledání knižních pokladů po mnohé další. Dokonce se mi podařilo vyhrát první cenu v knižním kahootu! Rád bych poděkoval studentským knihovníkům za to, že vše zorganizovali - byla to skvělá zábava!

The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott

I would like to recommend the series of books called The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel. I have always been interested in fantasy books, and after I read the first book called The Alchemyst, I had to try the second one! The series has 6 different books - all creative and full of surprise and adventure. The story is about two twins, with gold and silver auras, who find out that they were written in a prophecy in a book a long time ago. They face many new dangers in a world full of secrets. They soon start to realise that every legend and ancient story has at least a little bit of truth in it.

Rád bych Vám doporučil sérii knih Tajemství nesmrtelného Nicholase Flamela. Vždy mě zajímaly fantasy knihy a poté, co jsem přečetl první knihu s názvem Alchymista, jsem musel zkusit i druhou! Série má 6 různých knih – všechny jsou kreativní a plné překvapení i dobrodružství. Příběh je o dvou dvojčatech se zlatou a stříbrnou aurou, která zjistí, že byla před dávnými časy zapsána do proroctví v jedné knize. Ve světě plném tajemství čelí mnoha novým nebezpečím. Brzy si začnou uvědomovat, že každá legenda a prastarý příběh má v sobě alespoň trochu pravdy.

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

A Thousand Splendid Suns is set in the war-torn neighborhoods of Kabul in the 1990s. I liked this book because it is about the rights of women under the Taliban. Mariam’s father pushed her into marrying Rasheed, who was nearly thirty years older than her. Her inability to have children made Rasheed treat her poorly and also led her to become a resentful and frightened woman. Mariam's life changed when Rasheed's second wife, Laila, arrived. At first, Mariam and Laila did not have a good relationship, but because of a common enemy - their abusive husband - they became very close. Eventually, Mariam and Laila know that they cannot stand things any longer and they have to do something... The moral message of this novel is that we should be grateful for what we have now by never taking the people that bring happiness and fulfillment to our lives for granted.

Kniha A Thousand Splendid Suns se odehrává ve válkou zničených čtvrtích Kábulu v 90. letech 20. století. Tato kniha se mi líbila, protože je o právech žen za vlády Talibanu. Otec Mariam donutil, aby si vzala Rasheeda, který byl téměř o třicet let starší než ona. Její neschopnost mít děti způsobila, že se k ní Rasheed choval špatně, a tak z ní stala naštvaná a vystrašená žena. Mariamin život se změnil, když přišla Rasheedova druhá manželka Laila. Mariam a Laila zpočátku neměly dobrý vztah, ale kvůli společnému nepříteli – jejich násilnickému manželovi – se velmi sblížily. Nakonec si Mariam a Laila uvědomí, že už to nemohou déle vydržet a musí něco udělat... Morálním poselstvím tohoto románu je, že bychom měli být vděční za to, co nyní máme, tím, že nikdy nebudeme brát lidi, kteří přinášejí štěstí a naplnění do našich životů, jako samozřejmost.

The picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde

This philosophical novel written by Oscar Wilde in 1890 was first published in a magazine, this was only a shorter version of the whole book. Wilde then published the extended full version as a book in April 1891. The book received much criticism when it was first published, however it has come to be recognized as a classic of gothic literature.

Dorian Gray, one of the protagonists of the novel who is rich, handsome and youthful, astonishes Basil Hallward by his beauty. Basil is shown as an artist residing in London who is absolutely infatuated with Dorian’s looks and insists on painting him. Lord Henry Wotton, an acquaintance of Basil’s, shows up to observe Dorian being painted. Lord Henry influences Dorian a lot during the book, telling him that beauty is the only aspect of life worth pursuing. This makes Dorian wish for the painting Basil painted of him to age instead of he himself ageing. Later on in the book Dorian realizes that the painting has a subtle evil sneer from the cruelty he has done in real life because his wish was fulfilled. Dorian’s cruelty and evil sins lead the portrait to become more hideous…

I really enjoyed this novel as it had a unique story and very interesting topics incorporated within the plot. The contrast between the characters and how they all develop in different ways creates a lot of suspense and adds more interest to the viewpoints of these characters. The philosophical involvement coming from the way the author writes made it for me all the more interesting and fascinating to read. I really recommend this novel and I hope that if anyone does read it they will enjoy it as much as I have!

Tento filozofický román napsaný Oscarem Wildem v roce 1890 vyšel poprvé časopisecky, jednalo se pouze o kratší verzi celé knihy. Wilde pak vydal rozšířenou plnou verzi v dubnu 1891 jako knihu. Kniha se setkala s velkou kritikou, když byla poprvé publikována, ale stala se uznávanou klasikou gotické literatury.

Dorian Gray, jeden z protagonistů románu, který je bohatý, pohledný a mladistvý, udivuje Basila Hallwarda svou krásou. Basil je zobrazen jako umělec sídlící v Londýně, který je naprosto okouzlen Dorianovým vzhledem a trvá na tom, aby ho namaloval. Lord Henry Wotton, Basilův známý, se objeví, aby viděl, jak Doriana malují. Lord Henry během knihy hodně ovlivňuje Doriana a říká mu, že krása je jediným aspektem života, který stojí za to. Dorian si proto přeje, aby obraz, který o něm Basil namaloval, stárl, namísto aby stárl on sám. Později si Dorian uvědomí, že obraz má jemný zlý úšklebek z krutosti, které se dopustil ve skutečném životě, protože se mu splnilo přání. Dorianova krutost a zlé hříchy vedou k tomu, že se portrét stává ohavnějším...

Tento román se mi opravdu líbil, protože měl jedinečný příběh a velmi zajímavá témata zakomponovaná do děje. Kontrast mezi postavami a tím, jak se všechny vyvíjejí různými směry, vytváří spoustu napětí a přidává na zajímavosti těchto postav. Filozofický způsob, jakým autor píše, učinil pro mě čtení tohoto díla ještě zajímavější a fascinující. Tento román opravdu doporučuji a doufám, že pokud si ho někdo přečte, užije si ho stejně jako já!

Librarian’s Recommendation/ Doporučení z knihovny

Hotýlek by Alena Mornštajnová

I would like to recommend this historical drama told with humour and insight into the history as well as people`s moral convictions and emotional state. It is about a little hotel which belongs to Mr. Leopold and which keeps standing and is seemingly unchanged despite history, wars, totalitarian regimes and the weather. The author describes the lives of not only people in the owner's family but also the hotel`s customers.

Ráda bych doporučila toto historické drama vyprávěné s humorem a vhledem do historie i s morálními přesvědčeními a citovým rozpoložením postav. Vypráví o hotýlku, který patří panu Leopoldovi a který se zdánlivě nemění navzdory historii, válkám, totalitním režimům a počasí. Autor popisuje životy nejen lidí z rodiny majitele, ale i zákazníků hotelu.

My second recommendation is a book by Alexander McCall Smith called The No 1. Ladies' Detective Agency which is the first book of a charming, funny, heart warming and clever series about Botswana's No.1 (and only) lady detective, Precious Ramotswe. In this first book she is hired to track down a missing husband, uncover a con man, and follow a wayward daughter. However, the case that tugs at her heart, and lands her in danger, is a missing eleven-year-old boy, who may have been snatched by witch doctors.

Mým druhým doporučením je kniha od Alexandra McCalla Smitha s názvem The No1. Ladies' Detective Agency, která je první knihou okouzlující, vtipné, hřejivé i chytré série o botswanské detektivce č. 1 (a také jediné), Precious Ramotswe. V této první knize je najata, aby vystopovala zmizelého manžela, odhalila podvodníka a následovala svéhlavou dceru. Případem, který ji chytne za srdce a dostane ji do nebezpečí, je však pohřešovaný jedenáctiletý chlapec, kterého se možná zmocnili šamani.

Teacher Feature/Učitelé doporučují

I always loved reading. Books always pulled me with such a force that I had no choice but to succumb. My taste in books has changed a lot over the decades. In my teenage years I simply read everything I managed to put my hands on. In recent years my interest is in exploring the cultural differences, and therefore the life of people, in various parts of the world. The books I would like to recommend are stories about young people and their struggle to stay faithful to their ideas as their world falls apart around them.

Vždycky jsem ráda četla. Knihy mě vždy strhly takovou silou, že mi nezbylo, než nechat se vtáhnout. Můj vkus na knihy se za ta desetiletí hodně změnil. V dospívání jsem prostě četla všechno, na co jsem sáhla. V posledních letech se zajímám o poznávání kulturních rozdílů a tím i života lidí v různých částech světa. Knihy, které bych chtěla doporučit, jsou příběhy o mladých lidech a jejich snaze zůstat věrní svým myšlenkám, i když se jejich svět kolem nich rozpadá.

First They Killed My Father by Loung Ung

This is the story of a five years old girl surviving the brutal work camps, loss of her parents and training as a child soldier during the years of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia in the 1970s.

Je to příběh pětileté dívky, která přežila brutální pracovní tábory, ztrátu rodičů a výcvik dětských vojáků během let Rudých Khmerů v Kambodži v 70. letech.

Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang

This is a book you will not be able to put down. It is an autobiography and tells the story of three generations of women in a family in the history of China’s twentieth century. The grandmother who was given to a warlord as a concubine, the communist mother and the daughter (the writer itself).

Toto je kniha, kterou nebudete moci odložit. Je to autobiografie a vypráví příběh tří generací žen v rodině v Číně v průběhu dvacátého století. Hrdinkami jsou babička, která byla předána vojevůdci jako konkubína, komunistická matka a dcera (sama spisovatelka).

Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

There are lots of fantastic African writers and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is certainly my favourite. Her book is the story of ordinary people - a young woman, a university lecturer and an illiterate houseboy - and their struggle to survive during the Nigerian civil war in the 1960s.

Je spousta fantastických afrických spisovatelů a Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie je určitě moje nejoblíbenější. Její kniha je příběhem obyčejných lidí – mladé ženy, univerzitní profesorky a negramotného chlapce – a jejich boje o přežití během nigerijské občanské války v 60. letech.
