Senior School Report

We are six weeks into the school year and while walking around the college it is evident that there is an abundance of learning occurring. With clear learning intentions for every lesson and success criteria for students to direct their understanding I am reminded that Scoresby Secondary College offers an enriched learning environment.

Assessment is now occurring in most classes and this is something for students to look forward to rather than fear. It provides the opportunity to consolidate what has been learnt and revise concepts that have not yet been embedded. This is particularly true for Year 12 and their School Assessed Coursework (SACs). SACs provide the opportunity to gain feedback on topic areas in readiness for your final end of year examinations. I encourage all students to embrace assessment as an opportunity to consolidate learning.

Year 11 Elevate Educate Session

On Tuesday 22 February an elevate education presenter named  Jas, attended our school to instruct the year level on how to study effectively and productively. She taught us that although those who do study for hours upon hours achieve high marks, there is a better way to study less and still achieve these high marks, if not higher, as well as still fit in other things like hanging out with friends, part-time work, and extracurricular activities.

Jas was incredibly entertaining, telling us multiple story’s and engaging us as much as possible. She taught us how to motivate ourselves to complete our school work / study. She explained how to do this with a personal anecdote of how she kept herself motivated when she was studying with a photo of herself in front of The University of Melbourne (the Uni she wanted to go to).

She also gave us a few study tips on how to make yourself stand out and do well in class, some of these including spending 15-30 minutes a week reading something on the ‘scholar’ part of the internet about the topic you were learning about during class.

Jas was a very good presenter and I’ve learnt a lot from her about how not to study for hours and hours every day like I do, and to instead study efficiently and still have time to do the things that I enjoy doing.

Year 12

What a great way to start the final year of secondary schooling from school assessments to study periods. The culmination of 12-years of schooling has brought us to this point. The expectations are high, within and outside of the classroom.

In the classroom, every teacher ensures that each student will not only succeed in year 12 but encourages us to achieve our goals and make it a memorable year. Outside the classroom, teachers are focused on ensuring that all students maintain a good level of mental health with frequent conversations as well as ensuring students incorporating physical activity during Monday lunch-time sessions in the gymnasium.

At the commencement of each week the year 12 cohort is presented with an idea to focus on, ‘as a quote for the week’ with video footage and real-world examples of inspiration. The first week the theme focused on “The higher you aim, the higher you get” and the second week the cohort focused on ‘Expanding your horizons requires breaking through your limitations’

This was something that all year 12s will take into consideration, not only for the rest of the school year but the rest of our lives.

Athletics Carnival

Athletics Carnival is the one day on the school calendar that everyone at the college looks forward to. It’s a day where students can put aside their schoolbooks for the day and focus on physical activities.

Split into our age groups, we compete in a variety of sports, trying to win the most prized, 1st place, blue ribbon, scoring points for our House, in the hope that we can be a part of the winning House of the year. I completed in Discuss, Shot Put and Long Jump, and had a lot of fun with some good results. Luckily enough, my house won this year.

When I didn’t have an event, I eagerly cheered my friends on in their events.  It’s a day that everyone loves and it’s so obvious from the smiles on faces, the laughter, the chatter, the cheering and the positive body language.

One of my highlights of the day was the Year 12 costume parade. The spotlight was on the Yr 12 students who paraded their costumes. My group watched eagerly, sharing opinions and selecting our favorite - Fish Man, he won our vote.

Overall, I really enjoyed the day and look forward to next year.
