Big smiles from the Year 9/10 Cricket team

Senior Cricket

Northcote HS 5/101 off 20 overs. Connor Hastings 34*, Jack Oldfield 19*

Thornbury HS 80. Max Daphne 5/16

Northcote High Boys Senior Cricket team progressed to the Regionals after a topsy-turvy Twenty20 match at Donath Reserve. Northcote batted first and were 5/36 in rainy conditions with a slow outfield. Connor Hastings and Jack Oldfield put on an impressive unbeaten 66 run partnership to push the score past a 100. In reply, some tight bowling early from Nick Ryan and Finley Ward drew some false shots out of the Thornbury batsmen. Max Daphne took 5/16 through the middle overs to seal the come from behind win.

With no other teams entered in the Division, our Senior Girls Cricket team have advanced through to the Regionals. Results will be posted in the next newsletter.

Year 8 Cricket

On Monday Northcote’s Year 8 students competed in Year 8 Cricket against Thornbury, William Ruthven and Reservoir High School. Our first game of the day was certainly the toughest, going down in a close one to Thornbury. Our following matches were pretty one-sided with comfortable wins against both William Ruthven and Reservoir. All matches were played in good spirit and our student coaches Will Doyle and Sol Stewart were a great help throughout the day. Well done!

Year 9/10 Cricket

The girls won the toss and elected to bat and started like a house on fire with captain, Acacia (28 ret.) and Jade (24 ret.) opening the batting. Indi (24 ret.), Meg (20 ret.), Amie (20 ret.), Lily (18 ret.) and Phoebe (12 ret.) continued to pile on the runs in the middle overs. The girls finished their 20 overs with a huge score of 4/185 which was always going to be a tough ask for Thornbury to chase..

Thornbury’s chase never got out of first gear with the Northcote girls bowling exceptionally well and taking regular wickets. In the end, Thornbury were bowled out for 49 with Ruby (3 wickets) doing most of the damage. The girls play again next Wednesday in their quest to book a spot in the state finals in term four. Thanks to Mr. Snow for his support.

Our boys team also had success after a close competition. After winning all of their matches they are sitting equal with Preston High school and ended up winning overall by percentage.

Congratulations to both of our Yr 9/10 Cricket teams who won their to advance through to the Regional Round which is due to be played on March 2.
