Connect with the Student Services Wellbeing team

The Student Wellbeing team is here to help!

See below for information on how you can connect with your Student Wellbeing Coordinator (SWC), access counselling at school, and information and resources for support outside of school hours or term. If this sort or support is new for you, you might like to check out this video that explains what it’s like to see a mental health professional for the first time

The Student Wellbeing team also run activities, programs, and support groups (for parents, carers and students!) throughout the year. For further information on upcoming groups and programs please see the Wellbeing Programs section of this newsletter.

NHS stands with our LGBTIQA+ community

Many of you will have followed the discussion around the federal government’s controversial religious discrimination bill over the last few weeks. We understand that for members of the LGBTIQA+ community, as well as families and friends, the bill and surrounding debate may have been distressing, hurtful, and deeply personal.

At Northcote High School we stand with our LGBTQIA+ community and recognise that the debate that has taken place in parliament and the media has been tough and may have raised mixed emotions.

It’s important to acknowledge that for many this has been a difficult period. We want to assure you that here at Northcote HS we live by our school values of humanity and fairness for everyone. Every student has a right to learn and flourish at Northcote HS. Homophobia and transphobia, of any nature, is not tolerated. We are proud of our rainbow students and recognise the value they add to our school and the community we share.

All students deserve to feel safe and supported.

If you are a student who has been having a tough time, we encourage you to reach out to a member of the Student Wellbeing team to discuss how we can support you. Students can pop into Room M11 or email their wellbeing coordinator. Families and friends are also encouraged to connect with us to identify how you can support your child or friend.

Our LGBTIQA+ students and allies are integral parts of our school community. For other ways to stay connected, or link-in with supports, check out these resources:

  • Join Rainbow Club (for LGBTQIA+ students and allies) to meet like-minded folk, chat, have fun and plan school events. Rainbow Club meet every Thursday at lunchtime in either M9 or M16.
  • Questioning or looking to affirm your gender at school? You can chat to a member of the Student Wellbeing to discuss what a Gender Affirmation at NHS includes – rest assured these happen completely on students’ terms. Students decide what is important and who needs to be involved.
