Brain Food and Homework

Brain Food

Brain Food is an opportunity for the children to have a quick snack during the morning block of learning.

The purpose of Brain Food is to provide a nutritious, healthy, energising snack to help maintain concentration and attention. It should also be possible to continue eating the snack and be able to keep on working.

To those ends we remind and ask you to provide your child with a snack that follows the suggested guidelines:

  • A piece or a serving of fresh fruit
  • A piece or a serving of fresh vegetable

Please resist the temptation to send something that is packaged even if it is advertised as ‘Healthy’. Avoid sending snacks that require a utensil to consume, save that for lunch or recess.

A good rule of thumb is simply – something in its own skin.

Serving healthy snacks to children is important to providing good nutrition, supporting lifelong healthy eating habits, and helping to prevent costly and potentially-disabling diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity.

Homework

Homework will commence in week 2. It will be set on a Tuesday and expected back the following Monday.

We see homework as a great opportunity to help children develop time management skills, as well as more productive study habits that will assist them in secondary school.

Homework will be a combination of different skills.

Independent Reading and leaving a reflection based on that reading, is expected daily.

Then, on alternative weeks there may be a:

  • Mathematics component that aims to revise work and skills covered.
  • English component that aims to reinforce spelling and grammar skills.
