Electives Reminder

Just a reminder from Mrs Catt, Head of Teaching and Learning, that should any students wish to make changes to their electives, the cut-off date is Thursday, Week 3. These changes should then be reselected by Week 4.

Should a student wish to change Electives (Years 8 to 10), these forms are available from the relevant Year Level Coordinator.

Year 12 Biology

The Year 12 Biology students used our gel electrophoresis kits to analyse samples of DNA, hoping to determine whether ‘Baby Marie’ would be affected by sickle cell anaemia. They carefully transferred the prepared samples of Marie, her brother and her parents’ DNA onto the gel, which allowed the fragments to be separated based on their mass. Larger sections moved more slowly across the medium, while smaller ones travelled further during the same time. This led to the ‘laddering’ of the sample, allowing students to compare the genes present in Marie to those in her parents and brother.

This task allowed students to actually see the DNA sections present, building on their understanding of inheritance through Punnett squares and introducing an important disease that features later in the course.

Year 10 Agriculture

Mrs Smith's Year 10 Agriculture class spent time weeding the garden beds and incorporating organic matter into the soil as preparation for growing vegetables.

Year 11 Business Studies

Mrs Wilkes Year 11 Business Studies class found a fun way to increase their knowledge of types of products, profit and value adding - Teddy Bear Race Cars!
