THISTLELONIAN AWARDS 2022
Since 1997, Thistlelonians has presented awards to current Year 9 students; to date over $20,000 has been donated by ex-students and staff. These are awarded to Year 9 students who have demonstrated general excellence and contribution to the College. They are determined by the Year 9 Student Managers based on the recipients’ contribution to the college community.

It is my absolute honour to be the recipient of the revered Thistlelonians Award, and I am eternally grateful for being nominated. Being a part of the McKinnon family isn’t just about coming to school to learn, as Ms Binnion said, ‘it’s about being a part of the community.’ The Thistlelonians award is given to 3 students in year 9, which recognises their academic achievements as well as their involvement in extracurricular activities here at McKinnon. McKinnon isn’t like any other school, it makes you feel welcome, included and supported by both the students and staff. With its variety of extra curricular activities such as Debating, Ethics Olympiad and my personal favourite- Interact Club.
Some of the programs I was able to partake in last year included the McKinnon Sports Leadership Award (MSLA), East Campus Council, Student Tech Team, Inter-School Debating, Interact Club, Retro Gaming Club Leadership and many others. Being on the list of Thistlelonian Recipients gives me great pride to be with those who have gone to become lawyers, professors, scientists and even executives at companies, knowing that one day I might be googled by another student writing a Thistlelonians article doing research. I am looking forward to continuing to grow in the community and inspire others to follow the path of leadership and involvement just like me.

After a rough few years through covid and a transition from main to east campus, I feel honored to have been recognised for such a respected award. Mckinnon has done an exceptional job at allowing me to branch out and be a part of the community.
Being able to participate in a number of activities and events has given me a sense of such belonging and appreciation for such a well renowned school. I am happy to say that year nine was definitely a year to remember and so was the new campus. Being the first year level to learn at such an amazing state of the arts facility really added to the McKinnon magic.
Being surrounded by constant support and guidance from all staff and students was reassuring as we embarked on a full year of school with no interruptions. I thank everyone who contributed to this award and all the members of the McKinnon family who got this award before me. I am truly honored to be a part of the McKinnon Community and am touched that my efforts and involvement towards the school community were recognised.

Being a recipient of the Thistlelonian award filled me with a great sense of pride. 2022 was a truly amazing year. Being amongst the first year level of students at the new East Campus, I felt extremely fortunate and honored to be a student at a school with such an amazing and supportive community.
I couldn’t be more proud to have my name on the list of Thistelonian recipients. I am proud to represent this school in any way I can as it gives me so many opportunities to grow and thrive as a person. I believe I am very lucky to be part of this school community, and it is something that shouldn’t ever be taken for granted.
