From the classroom

News from 5/6 Unit

Hello Families,

In Literacy, we continue to read and study, City Spies. Students are beginning to delve deeper into analysing and critiquing the text. We are using the following comprehension strategies to support our learning; predicting, questioning, clarifying and summarising. Students will be completing our unit on writing Information Reports this week. The next unit will be on different types of poetry. Students will be introduced to poetry through famous poems, books and song lyrics. Students will write their own poetry using figurative language and other language concepts.

In Numeracy, we have been using a range of scales (kitchen, bathroom and luggage) to find the mass of objects around our classroom. We have been selecting the appropriate metric units when recording measurements and are continuing to improve our ability to convert between milligrams, grams, kilograms and tonnes. Next week, our focus will shift over to volume and capacity, where we will apply similar skills of measuring, estimating, recording and converting.

Additionally to this, an essential part of success in numeracy is being confident with times tables. Students should be practising these skills each night, with the goal for all sets (2-10) to be recalled with automaticity.

This Friday is Athletics Day, students are looking forward to competing in different events for their houses. Students are encouraged to wear the house colours/school uniform.

Homework is due each Thursday and is given back every Friday. Homework consists of Essential Assessment tasks, a grid task from the Homework sheet and reading each night for 15 minutes. If your child is unsure of what needs to be completed the homework sheet  was emailed to all families at the start of the term.

The 5/6 Waratah Bay Beach Camp medical form needs to be returned to Miss Davis as does the permission slip (either on Compass or paper).

Please feel free to contact us if you have any further questions.

Kind Regards,

Pippa Davis and Sheena Cronin

What’s Happening in 3/4 unit

Caution - Inquirers Hard at Work!!

Our phenomenal students are now getting started on their Inquiry Projects! Students have been set the task of creating an informative presentation on a chosen Australian event or person. Students have the choice to support their presentation with a PowerPoint, video or poster. We hope to be able to invite you all to our fantastic Inquiry Day later in the term where we share our research with you all!

Mathematical Geniuses... Certainly!

In numeracy, students have started learning about probability. This week we are shifting from referring to chance as 'Impossible, unlikely, likely or certain' and moving to representing this chance as either a fraction, decimal or percentage. Stay tuned for later in the week, where we will be discussing conditional chance, where the 'odds' change dependent on previous outcomes.

Fact - We are Learning About Non-Fiction Texts

We are exploring informative texts  during literacy. This week we discussed different text features and language that is found within informative texts. It is amazing to think about how many different types of information texts we can see on a daily basis. One of the homework tasks for this fortnight was including an annotated sample that is found around the house. Identifying the Title, Introduction, Information and then Conclusion.

We look forward to seeing everyone in their house colours for the upcoming Athletics Day!

Have a fantastic week!

Alec, Anna, Lisa and Pete

The Adventures of the 1/2's

In Literacy this week the Year 1 and 2 students have been consolidating their learning about information reports. It has been great to hear the students sharing their new knowledge on this genre at the virtual school assembly. Students have enjoyed practicing their skills of reading to find information, making notes and writing information reports on animals. Our next genre of focus is poetry and exploring rhyming couplets and alliterations.

In Numeracy, students have been exploring multiplication and practicing their skip counting skills. They have learnt how multiplication can be shown as a repeated addition equation, an array and groups of objects. This week students have been learning about 2D and 3D shape and how to identify different shapes based on their features and have enjoyed using the 3D shape models. They have expanded their vocabulary to gain an understanding of polygons and have compared how 2D and 3D shapes are different. Next week, students will begin their unit on division in our numeracy lessons.

Students have been enjoying participating in our Drama lessons each week where they are learning how to voice, facial expressions and movement to show character feelings. They have also been sharing their personal preferences on performances with their peers and sharing their reasoning behind their preference.

Kind Regards,

Helen Edwards, Adam Jarvis and Lisa Rosthorn,

The 1-2 teaching team.

Fantastic Foundations

Our Foundation students have been working very hard at understanding the "counting on" strategy in Math to help us find out 'how many more". With growing confidence, students are beginning to automatically recall some number facts that add up to 10, such as "I have 7 now, how many more until I have 10?" We have enjoyed using our counting teddies and popping them into a tens frame train carriage which has helped us to practise counting accurately and subitising how many spaces are empty.

In Literacy, we have been focusing on hearing and isolating the medial sound - the one in the middle! We have had lots of fun (sometimes too much fun!) pretending to be on a rollercoaster which has helped us to separate each sound and recall that tricky medial sound. We have continued with our phonics program and will begin our phase 3 learning - this will finish off some of the remaining single letter sounds and very soon we will be learning about digraphs!

The students were thrilled this week when we finally had a chance to work with our buddies - there were a lot of disappointed faces when the 5/6s were away on camp so the room was buzzing on Tuesday afternoon when we finally got together again! Many of our students have also been enjoying the student-led lunch club programs. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow and friendships develop with their peers beyond the foundation class.

Amazing Art Room

Our Preps have been busy creating 3D line sculptures - manipulating strips of paper and sculpting, twisting, bending, folding and attaching them to a solid base. We thought some of them looked like big rollercoasters or slippery dips!
