Sun Project Shadow Judging 2022 - Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA)

What is Shadow Judging?

Australian children’s literature plays a unique role in our culture. It has the power to shine a light on our world, while speaking directly to young people.

The CBCA have asked for young voices from across Australia to join the conversation about the books on the Book of the Year Shortlist. At the end of CBCA Book Week in August, at the Shadower’s Choice Awards, winners chosen by the Shadow Judges will be announced.

MGSC Shadow Judges

Mentone Girls’ Secondary College have five CBCA Shadow Judges: Aniela, Caitlin, Charlotte, Demah and Hannah, who have read and reviewed the shortlisted books in the Young Adult category, competing for the honour to be Australian Book of the Year 2022.

Our Shadow Judges have participated in round table discussions where they have critically analysed each book according to a judging criteria and created resources which have been submitted to the Sun Shadow Judging Project, illustrating their decision making process.

After much debate, our Shadow Judges have decided upon Tiger Daughter as the winning Australian Young Adult book of the year 2022. This book was beautifully and simply written, with realistic characterization, set in the ‘real world’ of an Australian school with themes the Shadow Judges deemed to be ‘extremely important to examine and debate’.  Tiger Daughter was not the first choice of every MGSC Shadow Judge, but it was in the top three and so after a consensus, the winning book was decided upon. I commend these students for listening to each other and ultimately agreeing upon a collective winner.  We eagerly await the official announcement of the winner later in the year.
