AGTV GERMAN POETRY COMPETITION

All Year 7 German students participated in the AGTV German Poetry Competition this term. Every student picked a poem to learn and present. Responses were recorded online in the ‘Flip’ ap. This allowed them to record themselves and add a background or images into their video.

Two finalists were selected from each of the five classes to participate in the regional final online. Alexandru Virbanescu achieved third place, winning a Bronze medal and Maya Mattathilwon the Silver Medal and a chance to participate in the state final. This was held on Saturday 27 August. We look forward to the results.

ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE BERTHE MOUCHETTE COMPETITION UPDATES

Our Years 11 and 12 French students had the opportunity to compete in the speaking and written components of the Berthe Mouchette competition this month. It is an excellent way to prepare for the VCE exams, and provided them with real-life experience.

On Sunday 14 August our Years 7 and 8 finalists competed by Zoom in the Alliance Francaise Berthe Mouchette competition finals, and our Years 9 and 10 finalists competed on Sunday 28 August.

Ruby Johnston-Allen is one of our Year 7 finalists, and here is what she had to say about the experience:

Without a doubt, the Berthe Mouchette competition was a valuable experience. I had a lot of fun practising and perfecting the poem at home and then seeing my hard work pay off. Although it was out of my comfort zone, I am glad that I was involved in this exciting competition. A special thanks to Monsieur Chamontin, Madame Lynd and Madame Reid for their support and encouragement.

Louisiana

Louisiana is the eighteenth state of the United States of America and it has a population of 4.665 million people. The national bird of Louisiana is the brown pelican and this is why it is called the ‘Pelican State.’ The national animal of Louisiana is the black bear. There are two different species of black bear, one is the Asiatic Black Bear and the other is the European Black Bear. So Louisiana’s national animal is the European Black Bear.

Louisiana does not have a national language but its most spoken language is English, followed by the French language.

Louisiana was first colonised by the French under the reign of the king Louis XIV. This is why this state of America is called ‘Louisiana’. As well as Louisiana having another king, it also had another flag. Its old flag was blue, like it is now but had three ‘Fleurs D’Iris’ symbols placed on it in an inverted triangle. After initial colonisation by France, Louisiana was governed by Spain. Spain ruled over Louisiana until 1800 CE when Napoleon Bonaparte reconquered Louisiana.

In 1803 CE, the United States bought Louisiana for $27 267 622. Nine years after the Louisiana Purchase, Louisiana was formally recognized as the 18th state of the United States. During this time however, Louisiana was divided into two sections, the Territory of Orleans and the State of Louisiana.
