HUMANITIES

LEARNING EQUALITY THROUGH FRIVOLITY!

The M&M's activity served as an interactive introduction to the concepts surrounding income and wealth inequality. This task involved our class forming teams, each equipped with gloves and a bag of M&M's - or in our case bags of equally delectable Choc Munchers - as we set off to recreate the distribution of income and wealth amongst the Australian population (without finding the data online). However, we were not allowed to simply eat the Choc Munchers - because much like most challenges, there was more than what initially met the eye.

In this activity, the team that produced the most accurate depiction of Australia's current income inequality situation was awarded with ALL the Choc Munchers in the room - significantly increasing the already, very evident, palpable tension in the room.

While my team did not produce the most accurate results, we were rewarded with a furthered understanding of the Lorenz Diagram and the ideas it represents.
