A New Chance for Reconciliation?

National Reconciliation Week

This week is a significant time in the Australian calendar. National Reconciliation Week runs each year from 27 May to 3 June. This year’s theme is “Be Brave. Make Change” it is a challenge to all Australians- individuals, families, communities, organisations and government- to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of Reconciliation so we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians.

Reconciliation Week is an important time for our school community to focus on working towards a shared goal. We can see the commitment for this vision from our staff and children throughout our school. A few examples of this are Mrs Harrison and Our Connect group hosting a wonderful Assembly to mark the beginning of National Reconciliation Week 2022 and Sorry Day. Walking through the school, seeing hibiscus flowers created by the children and a great display of connection in the library and shared times for Devotion with the message of Reconciliation in our hearts.

Recognising that Reconciliation takes more than a week each year, we are dedicated to ensuring we create authentic and regular opportunities for growth and learning. Through sharing God’s Word, storytelling, music, art and times for devotions and prayer, together we continue to learn about our shared history and strive for Reconciliation. There is still a way to go for us as a nation as we work towards Reconciliation; I feel encouraged that our school community are moving in the right direction by following the word of Jesus and by being inspired by his restorative way to guide and support the mission to “Be Brave. Make Change.”

Aboriginal Blessing by Brooke Prentis

May our footsteps, on these ancient lands,

remind us of creation and connectedness, in our search for truth.

May the Gum Tree, from its roots to its branches,

remind us to dig deep and reach high, in our action for justice.

May the Eagle, who soars in the sky,

remind us of the power, in our call for love.

May the expanse of the lands and seas, of the sky and stars,

remind us of God’s timing in our faith in hope.

May the Holy three, Creator Spirit, Lord God, Papa Jesus,

remind us of community.

So with grace, mercy, and peace, go in truth, justice, love and hope.
