Our Lady Help of Christians - May 24th

The Catholic Church celebrates the feast day of the Our Lady Help of Christians on May 24th.  "The feast day to Mary Help of Christians has been celebrated in Australia since 1844 but the history to this day dates back to the start of the 1800’s. The infant church in Australia had a special reason for turning to Mary. No priests were sent to the colony in its early days and Mass was not allowed except for one brief year until 1820. It was largely the Rosary in those early days that kept the faith alive. Catholic Australia remained faithful to Mary and was the first nation to choose her under the title Help of Christians, as principal Patroness."

The Ascension of Our Lord

This Sunday we celebrate the Ascension which is central to our Catholic belief. In fact, we profess this belief when we recite the Creed at each Mass ...

He ascended into Heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of God,

the Father almighty.

(from the Apostle’s Creed)

“The Ascension refers to the day celebrated 40 days after Easter when Catholics celebrate the fact that Jesus returns to God after being with his disciples after the resurrection.  It is also a Holy Day of Obligation and Catholics are required to go to Mass on that day.”
