Updates- Welcome Back

It has been great to have students around the college again and many are itching to play sport! Unfortunately, we are still governed by guidelines from the governing bodies. Through the initiative of Mr Phibbs and the sports department, the college has been able to run sport on a Wednesday for a Year level at a time. Last Wednesday saw Year 11 enjoy several activities such as football training, soccer skills, walking group, table tennis, badminton, circuit training and stretching and breathing. Students were able to get outside and be active in groups of friends which they enjoyed. This week the Year 12 cohort enjoyed the same experience.

The whole school has returned this next week and as mentioned, we can't run sport for 550 students each afternoon, without offsite venues. Through collaboration with the college executive we have come up with a program that will see each Year level do one period of outdoor activity and the other Year level will do one period in their class of personal development. It is hoped once venues open up in Term 3 we will be able to get both Year levels out each sports afternoon. We would like to commend the Year 7-10 students who enthusiastically took part in the program and looked to have thoroughly enjoyed each other’s company and the opportunity to be active.

Physical Education Classes

The college will return to a normal time table time as per next week, albeit with different lunchtimes for year levels. As students will be involved in physical education classes the college executive has decided that if a student has a physical education class on any particular day they are permitted to wear their sports uniform to school. For many students, it will mean wearing their sports uniform to school twice a week. (Sport day and physical education lesson day). Homeroom teachers will monitor this to ensure students are wearing the correct uniform for that day.

Term 3 ACC Sport Update

The ACC Executive are still awaiting confirmation from the state bodies on what we can do and can’t do regards competitive sport. Once details are released then arrangements can be made. The ACC is aware of the opportunities missed especially for our senior teams and one scenario is about playing a shortened round of matches for football and soccer in early term 3. Our traditional term 3 ACC sports would run after that. Again just ideas and suggestions at this early stage of planning.

We still have the ACC Athletics booked for August the 18th and the Cross Country for September the 16th. These events will run if we have the appropriate permission and all safety guidelines are met. I hope to have an update on how ACC Sport will look by the end of the term.

State Volleyball Champions and National Championships

The college received notification this week that the State Volleyball Championships and State Representative programs have been cancelled for this year. The National Titles on the Gold Coast are still to be confirmed later in the year once logistics have been organised and the tournament can be run safely. Volleyball training is still not taking place and most likely will not start until term 3. All students will be notified once this happens.

Oblate Cricket

As with the National Volleyball Titles, no decision has been made yet on whether the Oblate Cricket will run this year. The implications for Interstate trips will be very complicated and we will work through all the issues associated with this. Other timing issues will be explored such as running the tournament in early 2021. Once formal decisions have been agreed we will pass on all the relevant information.

College Gym

We have had a number of our students ask when they can get back into the gym and start lifting weights again. Unfortunately due to current state guidelines, the gym is closed to all students during after school times. Due to the confined space and cleaning, it is not possible for us to let the gym open safely. We will look to follow state protocols and look to possibly opening the gym after June the 22nd. We thank all the students for their patience with this.

One On One Coaching

AFL Coach & Former Mazenod Teacher Mr Damian Carroll

In these uncertain times with the structure of junior football under review, former Mazenod staff member and current Hawthorn Assistant coach Mr Damian Carroll is available for individual tuition and guidance for a fee. The opportunity to get advice from someone at the elite level is invaluable and could make a huge difference in helping guide your football future. The program can involve some 1 on 1 coaching and skill sessions. If you are interested in taking up this opportunity please contact me at the college with your details and I will pass them onto Damian. Email Mr Connolly at:
