Pentridge Boulevard

Intersection Upgrade Works

22 June 2020 ~ Mid to End of July

Moreland Council are about to begin upgrade works at the intersection of Pentridge Boulevard and the Urquhart Street entrance to our school. Although there may be some short term inconvenience to us in terms of access to the school from Pentridge Boulevard for brief periods of time during the last week of this term, overall this is a wonderful outcome for the long term.

It is great news for us because pedestrian signals will be installed at the dangerous intersection of Pentridge Boulevard and Urquhart Street. This will make it much easier for students and staff to safely cross Pentridge Boulevard on their way to and from school.

The road works will include traffic light installation and kerb, channel and splitter island works. This work will commence 22 June 2020 and is scheduled to finish mid to late July 2020. The construction team expect to finish the works by the time we return from the July school holidays so we expect minimal disruption.

During the period of construction, there will be work both day and night.  The shifts and the traffic arrangements for the shifts are as follows:

Day shift: 7:00 am to 5:30 pm. Pentridge Blvd and Urquhart St will be reduced to single lane in both their directions.  This includes turning lanes and turns will need to be made from the running lane.

Night Shift:  8:00 pm to 5:00 am.  Pentridge Blvd will be closed between Stockade Ave and Bell Street.  Urquhart Street will be closed from Wardens Walk to our school.

Provision will be made to allow any local traffic and parked cars to exit our school site at any time.

Depending on ground conditions and the weather, the construction team are planning to only need to complete works at night (and thus block Pentridge Blvd) on five seperate nights for the project duration.

In terms of keeping full access to our school while the works are completed during the day, the left and right turns off Pentridge Blvd into Urquhart St and our main school driveway entrance will remain open during school drop-off and pick-up times (8:15am to 9:15 am) and (3:00pm to 4:00 pm).

Outside of those pick up and drop off times, there may be times when access into and out of Urquhart St will be closed or limited to allow for completion of the new kerb and channel and splitter island.

The construction team will notify us of those times in advance. However, during those short periods of time the only way to access the school by car will be from the other end of the school driveway past the DET regional office / VCAA, from the Keith Street / Armstead Avenue entry connecting to Bell Street. The school gate will be opened for staff and deliveries at that entrance of our driveway.

A huge thank you to one of our School Councillors, Cate Hall, for her steadfast and ongoing communication with Moreland City Council and Vic Roads about rectifying the intersection so that it is safe for students, staff and families to use when walking, cycling, scooting or skating across Urquhart Street.  It is fantastic that this work is about to commence as an important safety upgrade for Coburg High School and our local community.
