Remote Teaching & Learning

CREATIVE LEARNING ONLINE

Remote schooling has called on both our students and staff to be adaptable, flexible, and creative! Here we share some of the work that has been completed across the school.

Health

Our Year 10 Health Perspectives class has covered a wide range of topics including First Aid. David Snaddon's class had a video message from Dr Jonathon Brown Bear showing him using DRS ABC to help his friend CPR Teddy. The class then responded by filming their own First Aid scenarios, below is a great example made by Mariana.

Art

7E were challenged by Eleanna Elliott to recreate a famous artwork using food, and the results wouldn't look out of place in a gallery themselves!

Scavenger Hunt

Years 7 & 8 Sport classes participate in three hours of activity at school focussing on the students' physical, mental, and social health. Teachers designed a creative way of meeting these targets from home with a scavenger hunt! Students were given a spreadsheet of recommended activities such as going for a 30 minute walk, ride, or run, mindful breathing, or playing scrabble with friends online. Students have been encouraged to choose a wide range of these activities to keep them healthy through a potentially difficult time.

Performing Arts

This year's production of "Into the Woods" was in its infancy when we first learned that we were facing a very different version of schooling. In true theatre style though SK Hanley and her team have adapted and taken it in their stride. Rehearsals have been changed, but not cancelled, and we look forward to opening night.

VCE Music, Drama, and Dance students have also adapted to a different mode of learning with the help of their teachers.

Dance students are happy to be back as a whole class after having to work in small groups with Luke Hickmott during lockdown. As you can see from their first class back below though, they have managed to work as a team, even after working apart.

Anna Berlingeri has been continuing to work with her Year 12 Music Performance students in preparation for the end of year performance exams. The Year 12s have continued their rehearsals on site in a socially distanced group rehearsal. It has been challenging to teach music theory remotely however with the support from IT Anna was able to deliver content live using an iPad and Apple Pencil after trialling various methods.

Instrumental Music

Our instrumental music teachers have done an amazing job teaching their students remotely. Lessons have been conducted over Meets and have been very successful, although they can't wait to be able to have their students back in the music rooms with them. Here are some of Loren Brealey's happy students:

Humanities

In Year 10 Humanities students have been studying 'Current threats to democracy'. One source studied was cartoons commenting on various aspects of the world's pandemic response.

Poetry

Kelly Aguirre's Year 8 English class have been studying poetry. Here is an example of a simile by Willow: "I'm as tired as a koala", and below is a slam poem by Max about his family.

Garden

Anna Vella has been working with some past students, parents, community members (neighbours) and teachers out in the garden every Thursday for 5 weeks and a lot has been accomplished. Obeying social distancing, and it's hard, the poly-tunnel has been covered, more garden beds built, and a lot of scoria laid.

Due to the pandemic Gigi is staying on the farm. She is healthy and happy as a pig in mud and she will run her wild little heart free in the paddocks. As for our chooks, they are also living the retired dream life.

Science

7I have been busy in science during isolation, studying solutions, solutes, solvents, suspensions, emulsions & colloids. The students even carried out their own experiments at home making & identifying this solution chemistry. The students took some fabulous photos of their work (see below) apologies to parents in advance  - I promise I did tell students to clean up the kitchen afterwards! We also read an article on separation techniques used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, such as winnowing & yandying. Winnowing is a separation method designed to remove lighter particles while maintaining heavier ones and yandying is akin to the process of gold panning,

separating less dense particles from denser, desirable ones. It is commonly used in separating seeds from their outer shells or coatings (husks). The mixture of seeds and husks is placed in a specifically designed container, such as a koolamon.

We also ran a class competition for the best photo of fungi & lichen following our classification unit, please see below for the photos. Great Work 7I, so proud of all your hard work during remote learning!
