Discovery Centre

Curriculum

What a fantastic week in the Discovery Centre, it has been great to see the students continue to settle back into routines, both new and old. We have continued to ensure there is extra time to wash hands and sanitise regularly throughout the day to ensure that all student stay safe.

In Reading, students practised reading and spelling their Magic 100 Words and CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. We began guided reading again this week so students had the opportunity to practise reading strategies in a small group with their teacher. In Writing, we focused on how to correctly write the letter p and the sounds it makes. Students thought of lots of interesting words that start with p such as perseverance, panic and parrot. We then used some of the words to write a silly sentence that students used to practise their handwriting. In FD we wrote about a purple penguin who played games with a pig.

In Maths, we focused on finding one more, one less and ten more, ten less for students who were ready. Students practised making numbers with concrete materials and finding numbers on numberlines and hundreds charts. We explored this concept through games such as three in a row. Students were very excited to see a game they played on Seesaw in the classroom! It was great to see students using teamwork and perseverance when completing activities in Maths this week.

In Guided Inquiry, we continued to learn about changes and observed the beans we planted last week. It was very exciting for students to see that lots of the beans had sprouted roots! We are looking forward to continuing to watch them grow. We also learned about chameleons and how they change. Students coloured their own chameleon with the goal of camouflaging it somewhere in the classroom.
