Leadership Centre

Curriculum

It was an exciting final week of Remote Learning for students in the Leadership Centre. The 5/6 staff could sense students were getting very excited to return to school to reconnect with their peers and be in the classroom environment again. In daily Zoom check-ins, students were very eager to find out what will be happening when they returned and we're sure they will enjoy being back. In the meantime, students continued to engage themselves in new, exciting and engaging online learning opportunities.

Over the last few weeks, students have completed a range of Mathematics tasks whilst learning from home and it has been wonderful to see them adapt to this unique learning experience. During Remote Learning, the Year 5/6 teachers were eager to receive student voice and feedback on the learning tasks being delivered to students via Google Classroom.

At the end of each week, students reflected on what went well and what could have been improved in the unit. The responses that students provided were impressive and it was clear they demonstrate a high level of understanding of the lesson structure and purpose of each activity. The students' feedback was valuable in guiding teacher planning to ensure these activities were targeted and engaging. As such, students embraced the opportunity to design their own Remote Learning Maths activity. Students were able to choose from a range of learning topics and thought critically about making the activity accessible for everyone at home. Students included a fun and interactive warm up to begin their activity and ended the lesson with a reflection task. It was great to see students include explicit instructions in their task, with some challenging themselves to record their instructions, similar to some of the videos the teachers included in daily tasks. Another great addition to students lessons’ was differentiated star tasks to cater to different needs. By adopting the Protege Effect; the idea that you learn by teaching, the students will have explored their mathematics concepts in a new way, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding about their respective topics.

In English, students continued to engage themselves in their respective debates via the Zoom online application. The 5/6 staff were very impressed at the engagement and enthusiasm students showed during these debates and congratulate each student for presenting their arguments. Students were able to complete a self-evaluation checklist to identify the debating skills they developed throughout the debating process and show the progression they had made since the beginning of the topic.

Reconciliation Week was held from 27 May – 3 June and it was important for students to recognise and reflect on the impact the Australian government had on the Indigenous community, from 1905 - 1970 (‘The Stolen Generation’). Students viewed a number of resources including a Behind the News video about Reconciliation Week and were tasked to record their noticings and wonderings as well as create an information document presenting their findings.

We look forward to all Senior School students returning to school today! We would like to remind families that all Year 5/6 students are to enter school grounds via Eugenia Street (school oval). It is important for parents and carers to remain aware of the social distancing measures still in place during this time so we ask that students be dropped off at the gate.

Have a wonderful week!

Mr Andrew Shaw, Miss Ros Walker, Miss Megan Campbell, Mr Hamish Burrill, Mrs Louise Naismith and Mrs Lisa Jones

  • Camp forms - All Camp forms need to be returned as soon as possible to allow further planning to go ahead.
  • During pick-up and drop-off, please be aware of the current social distancing  measures still in place. A reminder to stay outside the school gates in Eugenia street as you drop your child off.
