Careers Team

This term we welcomed Carly Pearson to the Careers Team.  Carly has already met with many students and is looking forward to supporting students across the college!

The Careers Office is open from 8.15am until 4.30pm. Please feel free to drop in to chat to the Careers  & Pathway team and if you would like more information about career options, please call 03 8795 9400 and ask for the Careers Team.

The Careers Corner has had a facelift!

Come and visit the newly renovated Careers Corner! We have a new Job Spotlight Board – every fortnight you will find heaps of information on a specific career. The current career is a Pharmacist!  Come and see what a pharmacist does, courses you would need to do to become qualified pharmacist, job growth and more!

We have also updated the Careers Corner News Board with information on virtual information sessions from many universities and TAFEs.

Inside the Careers Office, you can read up on 30 Favourite Subject Vs Jobs Posters. We also have a VET (Vocational Education and Training) space that explains what VET is and how this can complement your studies!

Careers News!

Our Hampton Park Careers Newsletter is published fortnightly and has lots of information on Open Days and Industry Events – Click Here for the latest newsletter!  A copy of this newsletter is pinned to the Careers Corner News Board.

Career Tools Account

Did you know that each HPSC Student has their own personal Career Tools Account?  This program is accessible via the Hampton Park Secondary College website and enables you to research career pathways, jobs, create a resume and lots more!

Recently we have been working with our Year 10’s, 11’s and 12’s learning about their strengths and interests and how this can help to determine suitable career pathways.  We have also been researching what courses and training students need to undertake to land their dream job!

VTAC Information Sessions for Year 12

On Monday 3rd June, we held our first VTAC information session. All Year 12 VCE and VCAL students are welcome to join these meetings. Check your Year 12 Careers Team Page for the next meeting date. Now is a great time for students to start researching courses for next year.  We have some handouts in the careers office for students to read and keep for reference regarding VTAC CourseSearch (or Click Here)  CourseSearch and the VTAC Process (or Click Here)

Headstart

Head Start is a program designed to help students begin an apprenticeship or traineeship whilst still at school.

The program recognises that everyone learns differently, has different interests and career goals.

Head Start lets you start learning skills for an apprenticeship or traineeship early – while still making sure that you get the real life knowledge that employers need by completing your VCE or VCAL.

When you finish school, you’ll have your VCE or VCAL as well as having finished (or be close to finishing) your training - giving you a head start on everyone else. You can choose from apprenticeships and traineeships in key industries such as building, construction, community services and health, business and primary industries. See Mr Evans in the Careers Office for further information.

Looking for a part time job?

You will find job search tips and much more under the Career Tools website on the HPSC website. Look under STUDENTS tab/scroll down to CAREERS & PATHWAYS and ‘click here to go to the HP Careers Website’ Under the first tab IMPORTANT INFO scroll down to YOUTH CENTRAL. Here you will find an abundance of information on looking for part time work.

How old do I need to be? Despite popular opinion, 14 years and 9 months is not the minimum age of employment – to be employed without a permit, a child must be 15 years.

Under the Child Employment Act 2003, children can be employed for a maximum of 3 hours per day and 12 hours per week during school term and a maximum of 6 hours per day and 30 hours per week during school holidays. These hours are inclusive of rest breaks.
