Teaching and Learning

“So, what should we tell our children? That to stay ahead, you need to focus on your ability to continuously adapt, engage with others in that process, and most importantly retain your core sense of identity and values. For students, it is not just about acquiring knowledge, but about how to learn. For the rest of us, we should remember that intellectual complacency is not our friend and that learning – not just new things but new ways of thinking – is a life-long endeavour.”

Blair Sheppard Global Leader, Strategy and Leadership Development, PwC

Recently PWC released a “Workforce of the Future” study which looks at four possible worlds of work in 2030, to stimulate our conversations about learning. For schools, the report confirms our approach to teaching our students and learning at The Hamilton and Alexandra College because it acknowledges not just the importance of what you study but why.

At The College, learning is at the heart of everything we do. Learning that is independent, engaged, and lifelong. Next week the current Year 10 and 11 students and parents are invited to attend our first Online VCE Information Night on Tuesday 9th June 2020 starting at 7 pm. This event will kickstart the conversation about learning as students move into the VCE and select subjects to prepare them for a future world of further study and/or work. We would encourage students and parents to attend together via Microsoft Teams.

There will be a live information session presented by a team of staff, including Dr Andrew Hirst, Principal,  Mrs Susan Bradbeer,  Deputy Principal Teaching and Learning, Mrs Rebekah Bonnett, Head of VCE Studies and Mrs Louise Manifold, Head of Careers.  You will also be able to watch a series of video presentations from each VCE subject on offer. On the night, staff will be available on TEAMs to chat to students and parents to answer any questions about the course. Our VCE Curriculum Handbook will be published online and a link to that document will be forwarded to you with your invitation to the Information Session. Subject selections will be online this year – please note that subject selections for 2021 are due in week 10 on Monday 15th June.

The future world of work is changing rapidly, and students and parents need to be cognisant of this. But what is most important is that each young adult has a parent or guardian alongside them, involved in the discussions about study in 2021, aware of the student’s interests, passions and with an understanding that the employers of the future will need agile learners that are creative, collaborative and connected to the whole of life.
