Principals Message
Dear parents and carers,
Teachers rely on a number of different assessment strategies as evidence for report writing. The purpose of assessment is to gather valid, reliable and useful information about student learning in order to:
- monitor student achievement in relation to outcomes
- guide future teaching and learning opportunities
- provide ongoing feedback to students to improve learning.
Types of assessment include-teacher observation, peer and self assessment, collaborative activities, research activities, presentations and work samples. Assessment may take place mid unit or as a pretest. We use a variety of strategies in order to cater for all learning types.
The following chart describes the cycle teachers use to make sure their teaching is effective.
At the end of this term you will receive a formal report for your child. They will be graded (see below) in their subject areas (academic) and also in the way they approach their work (effort and engagement).
Teachers have been meeting with some parents throughout this semester to discuss specific learning or wellbeing needs. We believe parents and carers should be “kept in the loop” about their child’s progress. The traditional idea of meeting in the middle of the year and again at the end is not timely, we like to meet with parents when the need arises and that could be at any time.
INFANTS REPORTS 2023
Due to the new English and Maths Syllabi being implemented in NSW schools, the Diocese has changed the format of the English and Maths sections of the reports. They are now much more specific, which I believe is a good thing for parents.
We invite all Infants parents and carers to an information session on Wednesday 21st June at 5.30pm to 6pm to explain the new reports, before you receive your child’s report. You will receive email reminders about this event.
PRIMARY REPORTS 2023
These reports will not change until the new syllabi have been implemented over the next year.
STUDENT LED CONFERENCES
In early Term Three we hold Student Led Conferences. This is where the children discuss their learning goals with you and explain some of their work samples to you. There is space for interaction between the teacher, your child and yourself.
This year the Infants teachers will share the discussion during the Conference with the students. There will be an opportunity to discuss with the teacher your child’s progress, as well as listen to your child explain their learning.
It is vital that students have a voice in their learning and these conferences are a meaningful way to show parents that their children are growing in independence and in ownership of their learning.
When I used to receive my children’s reports I looked first at their effort and then read the comment. A grade just tells you where they are and where they need to go. A report is a way of starting a conversation if you need to know more about helping them at home. We are here to work beside you helping your child become the best version of themselves.
Kind regards,
Jen
